A judge has come to a decision on the City of Hill City mayor voting on appointments.
A letter by Seventh Judicial Circuit Judge Heidi Linngren sent to the attorneys representing the two sides in a lawsuit filed regarding the 2-2 issue says then-mayor Julie Wickware-Klein acted within her rights to break the 2-2 tie, meaning that the appointments are valid.
The Hill City community came together Tuesday to celebrate and honor America’s veterans.
The program was hosted in Gins’ Gym and featured choral and band performances, a guest speaker, poetry readings and a presentation of quilts to honored veterans in the Hill City community.
This year’s guest speaker was chief Dan Richer, who is retired from the United States Air Force.
A report on the housing options in Keystone was made public at the most recent Keystone Town Board meeting.
Steven Griesert, president of Community Partners Research, highlighted some of the key points of the 87-page study at the most recent town board meeting. The study is available online on the town government website.
A new ordinance committee will meet on Nov. 18 at 9 a.m., according to the latest Keystone Town Board meeting.
No members have been assigned yet.
“I think the first meeting is going to be more of a planning meeting how we are going to tackle this large project of the ordinances and making sure they fit,” said Cassandra Ott, town finance officer for Keystone. “I know there’s been a few ordinances that people have had an interest in changing.”
A local connection recently helped students at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology get hands-on experience with dealing with fossils as well as helping researchers learn more about the history of the Black Hills.
The bones the students were working with were discovered in the Deerfield area and include bison, mountain lion, horse, deer and elk bones as well as a range of smaller animal bones. Research estimates some of these bones date back 8,000 years.
The Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission voted to send its revised sign ordinance to the Hill City Common Council during the commission’s meeting Monday.
The vote passed unanimously 5-0 and the council will discuss the revisions at its regular meeting Nov. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
“This has been a methodical process and I want to applaud the staff for their work,” said Rollie Noem, a member of the commission.
Those familiar with the Oreville interchange will notice a new sign directing drivers to Keystone.
“Keystone turn right at next signal” adorns a new sign on the right side of the road as drivers turn onto state Hwy. 244 east from Hwy. 16 north. There is a similar sign for southbound Highway 16 motorists, as well.
The idea for the sign came from Keystone resident Ray French and town trustee Sandi McLain.
Phase one of the Hill City sidewalk project — the second overall phase worked on — has been completed.
Crews will now shift their attention towards creating a bump out on the west side of the street across Main Street from the bump out constructed during the first phase of the project (phase four).
“All that remains for phase one (as of Monday morning) is to grade the sidewalks,” said Dave Buck of Complete Concrete, the firm responsible for work on the sidewalks.
