Walk in the Woods to see changes

Big changes are coming to the 500 block of Mt. Rushmore Road and A Walk in the Woods. 
Owner Koko Ward said, “Krystal Hegerfeld will join the management and buying team in November and we look forward to her contributions to the business.” 
Hegerfeld owned and operated A Walk in the Woods Minnesota prior to 2007 before becoming the director of retail in Custer State Park where she worked for 13 years. She was raised in the retail industry and is an active member of the Custer community.

County works to preserve history

Since Monday morning, Oct. 28, US Imaging has been working 24 hours a day in the Custer County Courthouse with a singular goal: preserving the county’s history one page at a time.

Bison prices drop at auction

The Custer State Park Fall Classic Buffalo Auction brought in $605,250 last weekend, down around $80,000 from 2018.
Prices were down across the board for the 12 classes of buffalo offered, with drops averaging between 26 percent up to 45 percent for light heifer calves.
“Prices were unfortunately down this year,” said Kobee Stalder, visitor services program manager at Custer State Park. “Markets like the bison industry fluctuate; some years are up and some years are down. You aren’t always going to have an up year.”

City revises parade rule

Who is responsible for  spectators — especially children — along a parade route in downtown Custer?
It’s not the driver of a float, argued Custer Area Chamber of Commerce director Dolsee Davenport at the Nov. 4 meeting of the Custer City Council, as she lobbied for a change to the recently-adopted city parade rules.
“Is it my responsibility for a kid running out for candy? No, it’s not,” Davenport said. “I don’t think it’s the driver’s responsibility to watch kids whose parents are not watching them.”

B-21 expected to impact Hermosa

The new B-21 bomb wing coming to Ellsworth Air Force Base east of Rapid City could have a major impact on enrollments at Hermosa School and that’s one of the reasons the Custer School District is eager to get started with building a new elementary school in the town along Hwy. 79. That was one of the points being made by district board members and administrators at a public information meeting held at Hermosa Monday night.

Keystone boards come together

The future of the Keystone Chamber of Commerce is up in the air according to a special joint meeting of the Keystone Town Board, the public and the chamber board held Oct. 22.

The meeting’s minutes reflect, “The chamber general membership meeting on Nov. 7 will discuss the dissolving of the chamber.”

The National Weather Service, looking towards winter, has released a winter safety guide. One area of focus in the safety guide is what to have in a car during the winter.

One dead in auto accident

One person died early Saturday morning in a one-vehicle crash west of Keystone, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety said in a release. The man was identified as Troy Thorson, 49, of Keystone.

According to the release, Thorson was driving a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and was not wearing a seatbelt. Thorson was westbound on Old Hill City Road when he lost control of the vehicle near Lafferty Gulch Road.

Buffalo to be auctioned

It’s Custer State Park’s Fall Classic Buffalo Auction time again, with it being bumped up from its usual third weekend in November format to this Saturday, Nov. 2.
Kobee Stalder, visitor services program manager for Custer State Park, said the auction was moved ahead because the timing fits better with the annual Buffalo Roundup.
“We can now work the herd shortly after the Roundup and we don’t have to hold the auction animals as long in our corral pasture,” Stalder said.

Fire district possible

In the not-too-distant future, the fire departments in Custer County may all be in a fire district, as funding — and especially volunteers — continue to dwindle. Just how those departments would fit into districts was part of a broader discussion on fire service held at the Oct. 23 meeting of the Custer County Commission.
