A visitor from New York called 911 to report a bison was standing “five feet from the road” along Hwy.16A in Custer State Park. Yeah, that’s what they do there. We were under the impression that sort of thing was part of what brings folks from New York here in the first place.

‘It’s a tough gig:’ Noem’s ‘demanding’ style sparks staff turnover, turmoil

Lee Schoenbeck, a power broker in the South Dakota Legislature as President Pro Tempore of the Senate, had a telling response when asked about the record pace of staff turnover in Gov. Kristi Noem’s administration, including a prolonged search for a sixth chief of staff less than five years after entering office.

Meet the GDD royalty

With the 100th Gold Discovery Days upon us, there is a new court of royalty ready to serve. Caylee Dennis is the reigning Gold Discovery Days queen, and Ella Allen, Allie Kelley and Mari Madeline McGehee reign alongisde her as Gold Discovery Days pincesses. 
Caylee Dennis was the CHS cheerleading captain for both sideline and competitive cheer and the president of the National Honor Society. She also participated in volleyball, band, choir and oral interp. On top of all that, she was also the valedictorian of her graduating class. 

Rick and Wanda Wheeler are parade marshals

Rick and Wanda Wheeler are Custer natives who have well over 100 years of combined life spent in Custer, and seemingly just as many years being involved in the community, including Gold Discovery Days activities.
It’s only fitting then, that the Wheelers, who have been married for 47 years, have been named the parade marshals for this year’s Gold Discovery Days parade—made even more special by the fact that Gold Discovery Days will celebrate its 100th anniversary this weekend.

Kessler’s path leads him to Johns Hopkins

The new head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University has a familar last name.
That’s because that new department head, Michael Kessler, is a Custer High School Class of 1992 graduate and son of longtime Custer residents Dick and Betty Lou Kessler.
The Kesslers moved to Custer in the early 1980s, where Dick was employed by the U.S. Forest Service.
“It was a great place to grow up,” Michael said. “I loved all of the opportunities to spend time outside and liked the small town community.”

 Monday, June 26 
2:16 p.m.: A deputy refereed a neighborhood dispute on Timber Trail in the Custer Highlands area. The matter appears to be settled…for now. 
2:33 p.m.: A found wallet was turned in at the sheriff’s office in Custer. 
4:17 p.m.: A “boy of about 14” wearing headphones was reportedly lying near Hwy. 385 just south of Pringle. A deputy checked the area but no sign was seen of headphone-boy.
