Boys wresting team takes on Monster

With the Mid Dakota Monster looming in the distance, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School boys wrestling team took on the Winner Triangular Jan. 8 with duals against Chamberlain and Winner. 
In the dual against Chamberlain, Custer squeaked out a win, 42-38.
Head coach Jared Webster said, “Some of us came out and wrestled, and some of us didn’t. The goal is to always have everybody step on the mat ready to wrestle, and we weren’t on that one.” 
However, he said it was nice to walk away with a win. 

Wildcat girl wrestlers place sixth at Bride of the Monster

Although there were not very many athletes to compete against at the Winner Triangular, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School girls wrestling took on Chamberlain and Winner wrestlers Jan. 8. Coach Clayton Sander said the score did not matter because the focus was on getting matches for the girls. They also brought up two eighth-grade girls for the weekend. 
Going up against Chamberlain, the Wildcats won 27-12.

Wildcats thumped by Crusaders

Last Thursday evening the Custer High School girls basketball team was standing on the tracks when the train came through.
The train came in the form of the Maȟpíya Lúta Crusaders, the top ranked team in Class A and a team that has thumped every team it has played to date.
That stayed the same against the Wildcats, as the visitors only managed single digits in every quarter during the 75-19 loss that saw Custer commit 35 turnovers and allow 52 points in the paint, most of which were scored on layups off Wildcat turnovers.

Ranger wrestlers take down Monster

The Hill City wrestling team took on the Mid Dakota Monster and Bride of the Monster in Presho  this weekend. The girls faced 43 teams at the Bride. 
Daisy Munoz had a win, taking down Khazania Cross of Todd County in the first period.

Hill City hits the highway in tough road stretch

The Rangers girls basketball team suffered two more blows on the road this week, falling to Rapid City Christian (RCC) Tuesday and Spearfish Thursday. 
Tuesday night, Hill City took on the 7-1 RCC Comets on the road. The Comets, coached by Paul Kieffer, have proven this season to have a deep bench, averaging 74 points a game and a near 30 point deficit over their opponents. 

Rangers continue to sink without sinking baskets

The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team lost two more games on the road this week, sinking their record to 3-5 for the season.
Hill City controlled the tip against Rapid City Christian Comets Jan. 6, with Isaiah Brewer going for three right away but not connecting.
Rapid City Christian,   which was averaging 50 points per game coming into the match up, scored first.
Brewer answered with a three-pointer and Hill City took the lead.
The Comets controlled the ball but couldn’t sink it.

New year rings in unkind for boys

The Hill City Rangers boys basketball team fell to 3-3 after a weekend road trip to East River.
The Rangers played the West Central Trojans (6-0), who took an early lead in the Jan. 2 meetup.
With the Rangers down by seven, senior guard Zane Messick hit a three pointer before Isaiah Brewer closed the gap for the Rangers  bringing them to within two of a tie. That narrow edge was short-lived, with Brewer stepping out of the game due to fouls and Messick coming out after limping off. 

Wrestling team resets as Monster looms

The Hill City High School boys  wrestling team competed at the Harding County Invitational Dec. 30. Aspen Frazier defeated two opponents in his 106 weight class, defeating Dan Skogen of Hettinger-Scranton in a third period match that featured a takedown, a reversal and near fall. Frazier also defeated Tristian Ginther also of Hettinger-Scranton.

It was a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows as the Ranger girls basketball team battled the St. Thomas More (STM) Cavaliers last Tuesday night on the road.

Wildcat girls close out Chadron tourney with a win

The Custer High School girls basketball team was able to end last week’s Chadron Rotary Club Classic in Nebraska on a positive note New Year’s Eve, closing out 2025 with a 47-33 win over Niobrara County (Lusk, Wyo.) in the seventh place game. The tournament was played at the Chicoine Center on the campus of Chadron State College.
Against Niobrara County the team was able to start strong, taking a 26-10 lead into the half and cruising from there. The girls forced 28 Tiger turnovers, which converted into 21 points. Conversely, the Tigers didn’t have a single point off turnovers.
