Janice Albers names snowplow

Janice Albers was recently named as the winner of the South Dakota Department of Transportation’s (SDDOT) snowplow naming contest for the Custer area with the name “Black Hills Cold Rush.” A total of 605 potential names were submitted in the contest.
Last Wednesday, Albers was able to inspect the snowplow herself and get a tour of the plow’s features.
 SDDOT started the contest three years ago with the goal of promoting awareness for the work done to keep the state’s roads safe—for roadway drivers and snowplow drivers.

County raises RX cannabis costs

If the $50,000 price tag to apply for a license to operate a medical cannabis facility in Custer County scared off potential suitors, they may have been scared off for good after the Feb. 8 meeting of the Custer County Commission.

Three escape major injury in ice-caused accident

Three people escaped major injury after a truck they were riding in ended up on its side in a Feb. 9 accident.
At 9:43 a.m. that morning dispatch received a call about the wreck, which happened when a husband, wife and friend were traveling on Ghost Canyon Road when the truck they were traveling in slid on ice on the road, said Custer County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Derrick Reifenrath.
The truck fishtailed and hit the canyon wall, which threw the vehicle onto its passenger side before it rotated back to facing northbound.

Crackerbarrel set for Feb. 25 at senior center

A crackerbarrel featuring all three South Dakota State Legislature District 30 representatives will take place next Saturday, Feb. 25, at 3:30 p.m. at Custer Senior Center. The event is sponsored by the Custer County Chronicle.
Reps. Dennis Krull and Trish Ladner, along with Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller, will be on hand to discuss what is happening with this year’s legislature as well as to answer questions.

Thompson sentenced to two years probation

Former Custer resident Darla Thompson has been sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty to one count of an 11- count federal indictment leveled against her in 2021.

Tax break likely for South Dakota residents in 2023 — but who benefits?

A bipartisan consensus has emerged in the South Dakota Legislature that the time is right for some form of tax relief to be passed as part of budget negotiations in Pierre.
But questions about which tax is reduced, and who will benefit, are still in debate and will be resolved largely on political inclinations and differing perceptions of whether the recent surplus of state revenues is temporary or a trend of continuous growth.

Assessments set to spike again

After being the only county in South Dakota that wasn’t assessing property at 85 percent of property value in 2022, Custer County property will be assessed at 85.19 percent of market value this year. That’s if the math is right, cautioned Custer County equalization director Leah Vissia at the Jan. 25 meeting of the Custer County commission, as she delivered her department’s assessment intentions.

Students honor area elders

Custer and Hermosa Elementary fourth grade students honored three area elders through the annual Elders’ Wisdom, Children’s Song program on Monday with a performance at the Hermosa gym in the afternoon and again at the Custer High School auditorium in the evening. French Creek Folk provided entertainment before the program and during breaks. This was the 15th year the program has run in Custer schools.

Triple T to remain trailer park, for now

The fate of the Triple T Trailer Park east of Custer has been  the subject of various recent rumors. For now, it is to remain a trailer park—at least for a year —before it may be converted to an RV campground, says resident Joey Bucholz.
With housing availabilty a rising concern in the  Custer area, the rumored short time allowed for Triple T residents to leave their homes before renovation of the property caused some to become upset. However, any major changes are still up in the air.

Custer man dies following crash

A Custer man died last week after the vehicle he was driving crashed on the east side of town, but authorities don’t believe his death was caused by the accident. Rather, they believe a medical emergency on the part of the driver was the cause of the crash.
