Officially, Nov. 11 became known as Veterans Day in 1954. Prior to that, the day formerly known as Armistice Day was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson to be a day “filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory — both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations.”
 

Purse Project accepting donations

The Purse Project will once again be collecting items to help make Christmas for women in need a little brighter.
 
The project began several years ago and has been run by Sue Anderson since its inception.
 
While Anderson has not been personally affected by domestic violence, she has known women who suffered from verbal abuse in relationships.

Vittles for veterans at the center

The Hill City seniors were excited to once again host their annual Veterans Day luncheon at the Hill City Center. 
 
Senior Center president Dale Householder said, “It just seems a natural fit to do that for our community. We’ve got quite a few veterans that are members of the center, but we open it up for the entire community.” 
 
“It’s fun for the volunteers to do this, especially in a new, nice kitchen. It’s so much easier to do than in the old kitchen,” Householder continued.

On November 11, the Hill City School District honored veterans through a compelling program put on by the high school student council.

I was a very picky eater growing up. One of my favorite dishes my mom made was called  Kasha Varnishkes. It sounds funny, but it tasted yummy. My mom knew it was one of the few dishes she could serve that everyone in the family could agree upon. In true “Leslie fashion” as my family used to call it, I would load up on the varnishkes and only have a smidgen of kasha, which I laugh about, because I am likely now to do the exact opposite.
 

Towing safety: understand the risks

South Dakotans will likely find it necessary to tow equipment at some point. Many things can go wrong without a proper understanding of the dynamics involved in towing equipment, and any vehicle extraction brings its unique set of challenges and concerns. 
 
Ellen Duysen of the Center for Agricultural Safety notes to not count on having the same results every time you tow equipment. Past success may have been “lucky,” even though it was a risky process. Extracting stuck equipment is never routine because every situation is different, Duysen said. 

Proposed Keystone fire ordinance discussed

Despite representatives from the Battle Creek Fire Department and Pennington County being present at its Nov. 2 meeting, the Keystone Town Board opted to table the second reading of the proposed town fire ordinance, effectively taking the matter back to square one.
 
The proposed ordinance is a way to legally establish a method of regulating citizen created burn piles in the municipality.
 

Down Memory Lane

— Five Hill City High School students performed with more than 1,000 of some of the most talented vocal and instrumental musicians at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls on Oct. 28. The event was the Grand Concert and is the largest interscholastic high school music activity held in South Dakota. The Hill City vocal students that went were Kylie Null, Jaydon Rogers, Holden Stach, Tori Lind and Jessica Welu. The 2017 All-State Chorus included 932 singers representing 148 South Dakota high schools.

Lois Halley and family would like to thank everyone who visited her on her 95th birthday and/or sent cards.
