‘Cinderella’ was a ball

Crowds of people flocked to the Black Hills Playhouse for the premiere performance of their third play of the summer, ‘Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.’ This fairy tale family musical sweeps the audience to a realm where true love and a little magic can change everything. “A place where imagination takes flight, and the realm of possibilities is endless,” as director Justin Speck put it. 
‘Cinderella’ holds all the familiar sentiment of the original fairytale while simultaneously being enriched with fresh new twists. 

What it takes to be in the wild

It’s difficult to truly comprehend the challenge of being a firefighter. Besides putting one’s life on the line in order to save people and protect structures, firefighters have to be physically and mentally fit to handle not only the stressors of the job, but also the demands on one’s personal life.
Hill City’s Carl Doaty is a wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service out of Pine Ridge Ranger District in Chadron, Neb.
Doaty’s unit is a national resource. It can travel anywhere in the United States. 

Hidden Gems

Sometimes the best gems are hidden in plain sight. That is the case with Tracy Park at least. After all, this peaceful spot right off the Mickelson Trail shares both pieces from the past and value for the present.

5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — Ward II alderwoman Pam Fowler was treated to a Polynesian-style bon voyage complete with leis, refreshments and a plaque honoring her eight years of service on the Hill City Council. Sworn in by Mayor Julie Wickware-Klein as Fowler’s successor was Kathy Skorzewski, a newcomer to the council. In addition, the mayor appointed and administered the oath of office to Frank Bettmann, city attorney; Kale McNaboe, city engineer; and Brett McMacken, city administrator. John Johnson was elected president of the council and Jason Gillaspie, vice president.

Creating colorful collages in Keystone

Pop artist and author Michael Albert drew about two dozen people to the Keystone Community Center July 8.
Albert is on a 65-day tour that takes him primarily across Iowa and South Dakota giving a hands-on workshop about his unique art. All total he will visit 122 different places. Traveling by car, Albert can do a show virtually anywhere.
He’s presented his ideas at libraries, parks, makerspaces, festivals and museums. Along the way he leaves a bit of his art behind.

Lakota Lake isn’t as hidden, but still a gem

Tiny Lakota Lake can be found just outside of Keystone on Iron Mountain Road. And while it’s not quite so hidden it is quite a gem.
The lake features fishing, picnicking and even rock scrambling and climbing. Anglers often find rainbow trout in the cold waters.
Another great amenity is hiking. One can choose to hike around the lake or pick up the number No. 15 Iron Creek Trail right across the street.
The trail crosses the creek numerous times winding in and out of open spaces and woodsy shade. It is approximately six miles long out and back.

Down Memory Lane July 6 Prevailer

5 YEARS AGO, 2017 — Bob Stanfiel, with Alpine Inn, received the Grand Master’s Award of Merit at the Masonic Lodge in Hill City on June 28. This award was presented for his efforts bringing joy and tasty food to the people affected by the Cottonwood Fire. All told, $42,000 was raised for the Cottonwood Fire Fund through the event. Stanfiel was also given a Masonic jewel that is one-of-a-kind and only he can wear. He was truly humbled and honored to receive the award.
