Did you get in on the film festival?

Since the film festival was just in town I figured I would write about movies. If you missed this year’s film fest you missed an opportunity to support the local arts and independent filmmakers telling a story they find near to them. I am glad I did not miss this opportunity and I hope you didn’t either!

Memories of a remarkable influence

Every child has someone in their life that means a whole lot to them. Parents, obviously (and hopefully) provide nurturing support to children as the progress through life.

Friends, too, play a huge role in a child’s life — both developmentally and socially.

But there’s one person in my life whose support throughout the years meant the world. We’ll call her Mrs. S.

So we are somehow one month into the year (seriously wasn’t it just Christmas?) and I have ticked four of my 50 first list ideas, putting me on track to completion so far. This last week I ticked two on the same day. It was one of the coolest days of my life!

To me, there are only a few people in this world who exude excellence.

Kobe Bryant was one of them.

Everything Kobe did was excellent, but, to me, one of the things that stood out the most about Kobe is that he expected that same excellence out of everyone around him.

Is cheating in sports OK?

Baseball, my favorite sport, has been marred by a cheating scandal. Allegations run rampant for months regarding teams, namely the Houston Astros and Boston Rex Sox, and earlier last week Major League Baseball (MLB) handed out punishments to the Houston Astros.

My 50 firsts list is officially being ticked!

I am kind of a foodie. There was a time when I only ate four things — hot dogs, chicken fingers, pizza and french fries.

But now… I eat almost anything and food is one of my passions.

That being said, I have a few 50 first food dreams that I have not yet fulfilled. Like the rest of my list when it comes to food I have done a lot of things so far.

Don’t make a resolution

Last year, you might have read a column that I wrote entitled something like “A very millennial resolution.” In that very column, I wrote about my New Year’s resolution for 2019: stay off my phone more.

Well, I write this column in 2020 informing you that, as someone recently told me, I have completely and utterly failed at that.

Bring on 2020!

I will turn 50 this year and I have decided to make a list of “50 firsts.” They are things I have never done that I have always wanted to do. This is a challenge for me. I have done a lot of things — lived in other countries, swam with giant turtles, gone whale watching, hitchhiked in Oz and motorcycled the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Christmas is here.

There are many things that I love about this time of year — decorating cookies, watching Christmas movies and spending time with loved ones.

But there’s another part of Christmas that I love.

This is the time of year to give back to your fellow man, to lend a hand to those who are less fortunate than us.

And the Hills have a plethora of ways to give back.

So a very cool friend of mine had to get rid of her chickens and asked me to take them.

I have always wanted chickens but right now is so not the best time for me to have them. Yet I went over there about two weeks ago to pick them up. I watched my friend trying to round them up — I certainly wasn’t about to get pecked to death and didn’t dare try to touch them.
