Artists sought for FAITH

The Hill City Arts Council Sculpture in the Hills has a new name and with it a broader appeal to include a variety of arts in one festival.
The Fine Arts in the Hills festival (FAITH) will still be held the third weekend in June and is growing to include  fine arts along with sculptures. 
The change was prompted in part by COVID-19.
THE 2020 Sculpture in the Hills was canceled because of COVID-19. In 2021 the popular event came back but with a smaller number of artists. 

Allen Gulch Road home deemed uninhabitable

According to  Hill City officials the recent inspection of 439 Allen Gulch Road did determine that there were concerns with the habitability of the home.

All aboard for Antique and Railroad Show

Visitors and vendors from all over the region got out to see the railroad memorabilia and antiques at this year’s  Antique and Railroad Show and Sale in Hill City.
“It has been a great day,” said Rick Mills of the South Dakota State Railroad Museum. Steady traffic filled the site both days. The event is a fundraiser for the South Dakota State Railroad Museum.

Lori Thorson joins Prevailer staff

Lori Thorson is the newest marketing coordinator for Southern Hills Holdings, LLC, dba Southern Hills Publishing . Thorson will be the go-to for advertising sales in the Hill City and Keystone market, as well as other areas around the Black Hills.
Thorson is originally from Swea City, a small town located in north-central Iowa.
It was in the communities of Swea City and neighboring town, Bancroft, that she raised her two sons. She says both her sons have incredible wives and they have given her six beautiful grandchildren. 

Not your ordinary after school program

On Wednesday afternoons, a steady stream of kids start heading to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Pine Avenue. The older kids are attending classes, but the preschool and kindergarten kids started doing something a little different. They have a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Montessori-style religious education program. 
This program was originally created in Italy by Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi. It was designed to be a way to help children connect with God as well as gain responsibility. 

Sidewalk work to begin, input sought on Hwy. 40

The South Dakota Department of Transportation held a public information session in Keystone discussing two upcoming projects. 
The first project is not expected to begin until the fall of 2024, although public input is being taken now. This project involves redoing the intersection at 16A and Hwy. 40. 

Bridges inch closer to bidding

The Roy Street bridges  in Keystone have received comments back from the South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT).
At the March 2 Keystone Town Board meeting, trustees voted to approve the Roy Street  bridge documents pending DOT and easement approval.
“We don’t have the final documents all lined up,” said town finance officer Cassandra Ott, who estimated the process may take one to two weeks. This preemptive measure allows the town engineer to submit the documents as soon as possible rather than waiting for the next town meeting to occur.

Get your antique on

Twenty different antique vendors will be packing into the Hill City High School for the 14th annual Antique and Railroad Show and Sale.
The day offers something for everybody including vendors from all around the area, historical author meet and greets and a chance to get your own historical items appraised.

Implementing Love INC in Heart of the Hills

On Monday, Feb. 28, members of the community gathered at The Little White Church for a Love INC luncheon. This meeting was held partly in person and partly over Zoom which allowed church groups from  Sturgis, Hill City and Rapid City to participate. From there, staff members from Love INC Black Hills in Rapid City talked about their ministries, and each of the churches participating shared an update on their own efforts. 

Nightly rental ordinance approved

Members of the Hill City Common Council approved the nightly vacation rental ordinance and its accompanying resolutions at its Feb. 28 meeting.
The nightly vacation rental ordinance applies to properties within residential neighborhoods. Language to the ordinance has been changed from the last time it was read. Yet still some citizens, like Jim Peterson, requested additional language changes.
“You won’t be here five years from now. You want to be clear as mud I’m looking at a third person reading this five years from now,” Peterson said.
