Mayor suggests vote on rentals

Mayor Kathy Skorzewski made it clear that she wants a public vote on the nightly vacation rental issue. Despite all the work Planning and Zoning Commission has done on the matter, Skorzewski wants the common council  to “strongly consider” placing the matter on the June 2022 ballot.
“I feel strongly  that as we move forward to this it should be something that comes up to a public vote,” she said.
The people that are impacted by this should be those people that weigh  in on it.

Forest plan will need input

Black Hills National Forest officials have initiated the process to revise the current Land and Resource Management plan, otherwise referred to as the Forest Plan.  Forest plans guide all resource management actions on the Forest.  
The current forest service plan was released in 1983, revised in 1987 and amended in 2006.  Depending on the outcome of the process the plan can be revised again, amended or completely rewritten.

Keystone Town Hall may slash pile

The Keystone Town Board discussed its liability in having a community burn pile at its Oct. 20 meeting.
A letter, submitted by Garrett Dixon of the Battle Creek Fire Department, expressed concern over this practice.
“...the Town of Keystone has always had a yard waste pile for the residents of Keystone to bring tree limbs to and every year except last year the Town of Keystone has asked the Fire Department to burn it. There is alot of liability with doing that.”  

Halloween events this Saturday

This year the popular chamber & visitor center’s community event started in 2019, Hill City Children’s Boo Bash & Pumpkin Festival, will continue to add to Hill City’s spooky October festivities.
Following on the heels of Friday’s Oct. 29 Main Street Merchant Trick-or-Treat and Boys & Girls Club  Halloween Carnival, the Hill City Children’s Boo Bash & Pumpkin Festival will be Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Visitor Information Center (VIC).

Cannabis approaches differ in Hill City, Keystone

While the two towns of Keystone and Hill City  share many things, their vision of marijuana may not be one of them. The towns have taken different paths when it comes to rolling out the ordinances for what medical marijuana will look like when dispensaries, cultivation, testing and manufacturing centers begin to open in South Dakota.

Wind Cave plans prescribed burn

 Planning is underway to burn 676 acres of land surrounding Wind Cave National Park’s developed area this fall and 669 acres adjacent to the Elk Mountain Campground next spring.

Bingo season starts

The Hill City Lions Club hosted the first bingo of the 2021-22 season. The Halloween-themed events drew players from all over the region to win cash prizes and enjoy the popular game.
Stefanie Doaty of the Hill City Lions Club said this event was raising money to help update the playground equipment at both Tracy Park and Memorial Park in Hill City. 

Dollars and sense: Hill City ponders starting community savings account

A small group of business owners, residents and community stakeholders gathered at Chute Rooster to discuss a potential Hill City community savings account. The Oct. 12 meeting followed a recent Hill City Chamber of Commerce meeting presentation and highlighted the prospects and possibilities of bringing an account like this to fruition.

Parent claims school vehicle did 90 mph

A complaint from a parent was brought to Hill City School District Board of Education’s attention at the Oct. 10 board meeting when John Jorgenson appeared before the board to make certain it was aware of an incident he said occurred on the way back from the high school football team’s game in Beresford.
