Federal funds are huge win for students

The Hill City School District is taking advantage of federal funds available to help enrich the district’s already outstanding academic offerings. At least 20 percent of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER)  monies, have to directly address learning loss due to the pandemic.

Superintendent Blake Gardner introduced the basic proposal for the American Recovery Plan (ARP)/Elementary and Secondary School Education Recovery (ESSER) for the 2021-2022 school year at the Aug. 9 meeting of the Hill City School District Board of Education.
Gardner laid out a proposed budget for the ARP/ESSER III funds for the current school year and beyond and the public can access those details on the school’s website. Also see related article on the front page of this week’s issue. 

Residents want road work done

Two residents expressed disappointment with the Hill City Council at its Aug 9 meeting.
Ed Sundby and Leroy Barker both addressed the board. Barker was brief and wanted to see road paving and the road study placed on the agenda of the next meeting. Sundby was a bit more direct saying to the board “nothing gets done, you don’t hear us, you got your own personal agenda.” Sundby reminded the board that it has “a whole city” to represent.

More riders, more accidents at rally

While the  Black Hills prepared for an unprecedented rally, traffic numbers showed only a modest increase over last year’s attendance. Despite the lackluster numbers traffic accidents overall were up, while the number of  fatal accidents remained the same. On Friday Aug 6, a 58-year-old male traveling southeast on Old Hill City Road died as he  failed to negotiate a curve and went into the ditch. The rally officially began later that evening. 
Not all accidents in the area involved motorcycles.

Peggy's Place gets another political visit

Peggy’s Place in Keystone is becoming the pit stop for politicians and famous political figures as they pass through the Black Hills. In the last month the restaurant has seen a visit from Gov. Kristi  Noem and Lawrence Jones from “Fox & Friends,” First Gentleman Bryon Noem, who visited with Keystone town officials, and  most recently, former Trump attorney Sidney Powell.
“I don’t know how this keeps happening,” said Peggy Janecek, owner of Peggy’s Place.

Bridge work moved from fall to spring

The Roy Street bridges  construction is delayed  yet again, according to a report discussed at the Aug. 4 Keystone Town Board meeting.
“Fall construction is not very feasible,” according to the report by town engineer Ron Bengs. Bengs cited  DOT requirements and delayed responses, materials cost and contractor availability as reasons for the delay.

Quilt Show Dates Set

The Hill City Arts Council is proud to bring this long-standing showcase of quilts and fiber artists to the community. This year’s celebration will be Sept. 11-12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily for this two-day celebration of the art of quilting. Admission is $5 at the door for adults. Kids ages 18 and under get in free. 

Family piano makes its way back to the Hills

A Steinway piano manufactured in 1885 made its way back to Rapid City and to the family that originally owned it, the Halley family. 
Terry Tullis was born in Rapid City in 1942. His dad was a geologist at the South Dakota School of Mines  and Technology and was chairman of the department until 1968. 
“My parents at some point somehow got to know the Halleys,” Tullis said.
He’s not certain if they rented a room from the family or how the connection came about. 

Trash talk over as action begins

Downtown Keystone got a mini-makeover prior to the start of rally week. 
Town board president Kwinn Neff could be seen by business owners cleaning the streets of the town. Neff rented a pressure washer and along with the public works department and the Battle Creek Fire Department helped to beautify the town. The fire department will not bill the town for the work and considers the efforts a part of the partnership the town has with the department. 
Business owners throughout town were elated.

Man dies in motorcycle crash

One person died and another person was injured Saturday morning in a fatal crash involving three motorcycles that occurred near Keystone. 
Names of the three people involved are not being released pending notification of family members.
