Victorian Christmas to have a twist

Victorian Christmas in Keystone will have a twist this year according to MacKenzie Swanson, director of the Keystone Senior Center.

“The twist is mostly in decorating,” Swanson said.

The event features local crafts and vendors from the area.

“We currently have vendors with everything from art to jams and jellies to collectibles,” Swanson said. “There are no rules as to what you can sell at your table.”

Sacrifices remembered

Retired U.S. Army colonel Terry DeRouchey of Hot Springs spent 30 years of his military career shuttling his wife and children to assignments at various places around the globe. So, when he thinks about Veterans Day, his thoughts go to the sacrifices not only of those who have served, but of their loved ones as well. 
“I think of the guys who are all over the world,” says DeRouchey, “whether it’s on Veterans Day or on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, pulling duty somewhere and hoping that somebody’s thinking of them back on the mainland.

2:22 p.m.: Two cars bumped each other in a non-injurious way at Fifth and Harney Streets in Custer. 
6:21 p.m.: Cow problems were reported on Hart Road. This is apparently an ongoing issue in the area. 
Snow and wind caused poor road conditions around the Custer County high country. Deputies dealt with various slips and slide-offs throughout the night. 

Boo Bash declared a success

The first Boo Bash and Pumpkin Festival was a success, said Janet Wetovick-Bily, executive director of the Hill City Chamber of Commerce.

The weather for the event was great, she said, and the trunk-or-treat participants from Fountain Springs Church and the Gold Dust Chapter of the Veterans Motor Club of America could not have been nicer or more generous, she said.

Black Hills Film Festival changes date

Throughout the history of the event, the Black Hills Film Festival has been held in the spring.

However, after receiving feedback from attendees last year, Chris VanNess, executive director of the film festival, said the film festival will move to February.

“We had comments in the surveys that it was too busy for both volunteers and patrons when it was held in April and May,” she said. “We found a date in February that was open.”

Kids treated to Keystone tradition

Children from all over the region came to sample the treats, games and prizes at this year’s Penny Carnival at the Keystone Community Center.

Librarian Robin Scott donated many hours of her spare time to put on this spooktacular event.

“I spent all week setting up,” she said. “I was here after work, probably about 20 or 30 hours. I really never figured it out.”

Fennell to record TV sitcom pilot

Following in the tradition of classic network TV sitcoms like “Friends” and “Family Matters,” Custer native and New York City filmmaker Neil Fennell is set to make a television pilot show that will be recorded in front of a live studio audience. 

Search and Rescue open house Nov. 4
