11:21 a.m.: A vagrant was reportedly sleeping on a bench in front of a restaurant on Custer’s north Fifth Street. A deputy went there and asked the hobo to move on, which he did.

— The 55th annual Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park held Sept. 25 could easily be listed as a successful event. Those gathered in the buffalo corrals at the park saw a herd of 1,450 bison herded into corrals to be vaccinated and have their general health checked ... It wasn’t close from the beginning. The Hill City Rangers dominated the Newell Irrigators during the Rangers’ homecoming game Sept. 25. A packed house was on hand to witness a prolific Rangers running attack that saw them go up 58-0 at half time, which is when the game was called.

Tuesday, Sept. 2
4:51 p.m.: A missing 7-year-old child was reported in the Custer area. The kid was eventually located safe and sound after getting on the wrong school bus to go home and ending up on the wrong side of the county.

Plein air confers creative challenges

The eighth annual Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out began a little wet for both artists and organizers. Hill City Arts Council volunteers spent a wet Wednesday making space in the Jon Crane Gallery and moving some artwork into a truck on loan from Boyd’s Antiques so that plein air art could be displayed for the show.
