One last scramble before state meet

Before heading to the South Dakota Class A State Golf Meet, the Custer High School Wildcats went to Douglas for one last scramble May 27.
For the scramble, Shauna Zacher, Quinn Lewison, Jordyn Uphoff and Lyncoln Robb played in pairs, keeping the best strokes between them for a combined score. The results were not tallied as the meet was just a fun way for the girls to get 18 more holes in.
The state meet took place June 2-3 at Madison Country Club. For some of the girls, this was a new experience, and for others, this was their first time attending.

Rangers run to the top at state track and field meet

BAthletes from the Hill City varsity track team made their mark last weekend at the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) Clas A State Track and Field Meet in Sioux Falls. 
The boys team turned in an exceptional performance, finishing third overall and capturing two state championship titles. 
“We scored 53 points, which is third and kind of where we thought we could be,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “It was a battle to get third, you know. We only got it by one point, but it felt good. Especially when you can get your rival.”

Girls golf team qualifies for state

Teeing off at Rocky Knolls Golf Course, the South Dakota Class A Region 4 girls golf tournament May 22 was a success for the Custer High School Wildcats. They tied for third as a team with a combined score of 422. This qualified the team for a spot at the state tournament June 2-3 at Madison Country Club.
In the region tournament, senior Quinn Lewison led the way for the Wildcats with a ninth place finish and a score of 94.
Coach Haley Uphoff said, “Quinn had a great day.”

Wildcat eyes turn to state track meet

Around 40 Custer High School track team members will head east to Sioux Falls this weekend, having qualified in some form or fashion for the South Dakota High School Class A State Track Meet. The meet will be contested at Howard Wood Stadium.
Among the Wildcats taking the trip are a mix of school record-holders, state record-holders, qualifiers and alternates, all looking to make their mark at the last track meet of the season, and potentially bring home a trophy for Custer High School.

Rangers putt past wall for three-peat

The Hill City High School Rangers golf team three-peated as the Region 6B champions this season  at the Hart Ranch Golf Course May 22.
The win marks the third  consecutive regional championship for the team, with the Wall Eagles once again trailing right behind. The Rangers finished with a team total of 237.
“Winning the region was one of our preseason goals, and to accomplish it feels great,” said coach Josh Daiss. “Wall and Philip have a great group of golfers, and we have pushed each other to improve each tournament.”

Rangers deliver at ‘last chance’ before state

With just days before the South Dakota State Track Meet, the Rangers made the most of their “last chance” at the West River Last Chance Meet, hosted at South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City last Thursday. For many athletes it was a final opportunity to improve seedings, secure favorable lanes and build momentum going into the final stretch of the season.

Boys, girls place third at BHC meet

Only a few weeks after becoming the all-time all-class leader in the triple jump in state history, Custer senior Cade Lehman has made a little more history.
Lehman hit a leap of 23-8 1/2 in the long jump at last week’s Black Hills Conference meet in Belle Fourche, another personal best and extension of his school record. It is also the fourth-longest jump in state history, regardless of class.
“Cade’s long jump,” Custer head coach Karen Karim said. “Are you kidding me?”

Standout athletes honored at awards night

Last Thursday evening the Hill City High School Theatre was filled with pride, applause and celebration as the school honored its student athletes during the annual Athletic Awards Night. Coaches, players and families gathered to recognize a year of record-breaking achievements, championship runs and incredible individual and team performances across all sports.
Girls volleyball coach Allison Henderson expressed deep pride in her team’s efforts this past season. The Rangers concluded an impressive run with a 29-4 record, falling just short in the Class A SoDak 16. 

Rangers win four conference championships

The Hill City Rangers put on a strong all-around performance at the Black Hills Conference Invite Track Meet last Tuesday in Belle Fourche, with both the boys and girls teams placing fourth overall. Head coach Joe Noyes called it a great day and expressed optimism about the team’s postseason prospects.
“I’m encouraged,” said Noyes. “We didn’t load up any event area, and we still competed and finished well as a team. This has me excited for the state meet.”
