Davis places second at region meet

After placing second in the 220-pound weight class at last weekend’s regional meet Hill City’s Tanner Davis is going to the State Class B wrestling championships. Davis will be the sixth seed at the championships and has a 17-6 record. 
The road to the state championship will require Davis to first take out Herman Frisvold of Lemmon-Mcintosh.  Frisvold has a record of 23-20. The two seniors most recently were on the mat together at the Black Hills Classic where Davis easily defeated Frisvold in 45 seconds. 

Nine Wildcats are headed to state tournament

They call them “The Notorious Nine”—the nine Custer wrestlers who will board a bus for Sioux Falls Wednesday to compete in this week’s State Class B Wrestling Tournament. On the team are several repeats from last year’s “Elite 11” team which was the largest state tourney team ever sent by head coach Jared Webster. The seven familiar faces include freshman standout Tray Weiss (106 pounds), 126-pound junior Landon Woodward, brothers Pierce (132) and Sterling (182) Sword, Jonathan Lewis (160), Parker Noem (170) and Zayne Severyn (195).

Girls to face Rangers in region play

The Custer-Hill City rubber match is set, with the winner moving on and the loser turning in their jerseys.
That’s what is on the line Thursday evening in Hill City, when the Custer High School girls basketball team travels to Hill City for a first-round matchup in Region 8A play. The winner advances to the region semifinals at St. Thomas More Saturday.
The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday evening, but Lead-Deadwood’s school closure Tuesday caused the Region 8A tournament to be pushed back.

Rangers face tough games this week

Hill City High School boys basketball coach Laramie Harvey said the Rangers had a couple losses last week that were with closely matched teams, but things just weren’t going their way. They were back-to-back games with Douglas at home on Thursday night, falling to the Patriots 67-58.
“Douglas made quite a few of their three-pointers which made a big difference in the game,” said Will Walther, a Ranger team member.

Ranger girls wrapping up regular season

The Hill City Ranger girls are getting down to the finish line of the regular basketball season after a week of two wins and a loss.  After beating Lead-Deadwood Monday night last week they came up with an easy win against Douglas, 44-24, enabling them to work through the plans they had practiced.
The game with Lakota Tech was a tough one for the Lady Rangers, which they knew going into the game.

Wildcats hang on against Spearfish

Boosted by 16 points from Josey Wahlstrom and 15 from Ally Cass, the Custer High School girls basketball team put another win against a Class AA opponent in the ledger when it defeated the Spearfish Spartans 46-41 last Thursday evening at the Armory.
After a break-neck schedule of four games in six days the previous week the matchup against the Spartans was the team’s only game last week, and it was close throughout with neither team leading by more than seven points at any point in the game.

Boys fall three more times, losing streak at four

It was a tough week for the Custer High School boys basketball team last week as the Wildcats’ losing streak stretched to four as the ’Cats lost all three games it played last week. The most recent of the losses came last Saturday night, a 67-53 setback at the hands of Lakota Tech.
The Tatanka buried the Wildcats in an avalanche of three-pointers, as the visitors made 12 triples in the win, which accounted for 36 of the team’s points.

Wildcats eye Region 4B tournament

Freshman wrestler Tray Weiss remains at the top of the heap in his 106-pound weight class going into the Region 4B wrestling finals in Ft. Pierre this weekend. The 36-3 Weiss is ranked No. 1 in the Week 10 Class B statewide rankings released by Dakota Grappler on Monday.

Rangers defeat ’Diggers

In a double-header with the boys team at Lead-Deadwood on Monday night, the Hill City High School girls basketball team showed its strength on the court. Their defense was strong and kept the Golddiggers scoreless in the first and third quarter and won the game. 
“We played as a team on Monday night. We played together and were not just playing as friends, but like a family. We had really good defense that seemed to stop them,” said Lillie Ross, one of the Lady Rangers.
