Carol Sharpe
Carol Louise Sharpe was a lifelong educator, devoted family member, and kind-hearted community member who touched many lives. She passed away June 27, 2025.
Carol was born Feb. 25, 1943 in Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from Alliance, Neb., High School in 1960. She went on to earn an Associate degree in Education from Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., a school supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She continued her education with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley and a Master’s degree from Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb.
From 1968 until her retirement in 1986, Carol taught in the Alliance Public Schools. She was known for going above and beyond for her students—organizing computer classes, a chess club and even a weekly student-run newscast that aired in classrooms on Fridays. These enriching programs were held after school, a testament to her dedication and love for learning.
Carol was married to Bill Phipps, who preceded her in death in 1999, and later to Ellwood Sharpe, who preceded her in death in 2012.
Carol’s step-son, Randy, fondly remembers her canning sweet corn by the bushels each fall. Her niece recalls how Carol always made sure to take visitors to the local tourist and historical sites around Hill City—usually ending the trip with ice cream. Even the deer that visited her yard daily will miss her gentle presence.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Beverly Myers (2020); her mother, Louise Mayes (2004); and her father, Leonard Mayes (1994).
Carol is survived by her sister, Sharon Bates; step-sons, Randal Phipps and Kenton Sharpe; and step-daughters, Angel Phipps and Kelly Sharpe.
Per Carol’s request, no funeral service was held. Her ashes will be placed at a later date in the Alliance City Cemetery.
A lifelong advocate for education, Carol requested that any memorial donations be made in her name to either:
• Alliance Public School Foundation, Alliance, Neb.
• P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund, Philanthropic Educational Organization, Des Moines, Iowa
She will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, and steadfast support of learning.
