U.S. capitol tree stopping in Custer
The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau invites residents and visitors to celebrate a special holiday occasion as the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree makes a stop in Custer Tuesday, Nov. 10, as part of its journey from Idaho to Washington, D.C., where it will be displayed on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.
Custer is honored to be one of the select communities chosen to welcome the Capitol Christmas Tree during its cross-country Whistlestop Tour. Chamber officials say this visit offers an opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate the holiday season and recognize the importance of our national forests and the people who care for them.
The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce will host a family-friendly community celebration from 4 -6 p.m. at Way Park, located at the intersection of 4th Street and Mount Rushmore Road in Custer. The event will feature Santa Claus and Smokey Bear for family photo opportunities, educational displays and Capitol Christmas Tree merchandise. Guests can also sign a community banner that will travel with the tree to Washington, D.C., leaving a special message from the people of Custer as the tree continues its journey to our nation’s capital.
Chamber officials say the celebration is expected to bring together local families, visitors, community organizations and businesses to welcome this nationally recognized holiday tradition. Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend.
As part of the festivities, local law enforcement, fire departments and U.S. Forest Service vehicles are expected to participate in a mini-parade escorting the Capitol Christmas Tree into town. The procession route is awaiting final approval, and additional details will be announced once arrangements are confirmed.
“The arrival of the Capitol Christmas Tree is a unique opportunity for Custer to showcase its community spirit, hospitality, and connection to the Black Hills and our public lands,” said chamber director Dawn Murray. “The chamber encourages residents to come out, welcome the tree, take part in the festivities, and help make this a magical moment for our community.”
Additional information regarding the tree’s arrival, procession route, and event activities will be shared as details are finalized on the chamber’s website at custersd.com.
