Wildcat girls place eighth in Spearfish scramble
Starting the year with a scramble, the Custer High School girls golf team competed at the Spearfish Invitational April 15.
For the two-person scramble, the girls played in pairs. Both would hit, and then they would take the best shot from that point on. Hence, they had one score together.
Jordyn Uphoff and Shauna Zacher finished in eighth with a 77, Quinn Lewison and Julianna Uphoff finished in 12th with an 85 and Kayda Hanis and Lyncoln Robb finished 15th with a 91.
“It was a fun start to the year, and I thought the girls played well. They had fun being able to play together. So it was a good first 18 holes. They got some jitters out and got some good hits in,” said head coach Haley Uphoff.
At this time of the year, Uphoff said she did not put any weight on the results of the scramble. Rather, she saw it as a good, stress-free way for the girls to get in 18 holes at the beginning of the season.
“It was fun for them. I thought they played well, and they were happy with how they played. It was nice to have it be in that format for this tournament. Especially the first nine holes, you could definitely see some jitters from not having a lot of time on the course yet. And then second nine, I could see all of them relax a little, maybe get a little more focused and play a little better,” said Uphoff.
Uphoff hopes the scramble increased the Wildcat girls’ confidence going into the next tournament.
The girls competed in the Douglas Pre-Conference tournament Tuesday, April 22. This is the first of two tournaments in Douglas for the Wildcats before the Black Hills Conference tournament takes place in Douglas May 12.
“We typically play Douglas at least twice during the season. So it’s nice that it’s there because it’s a course that they’re already pretty familiar with,” said Uphoff. “Some of the other girls don’t have quite the amount of experience there that the older ones do, so it will give them a couple times to see the course and be able to be more prepared.”
Results of the tournament were not available upon publication.
Next, the Wildcats will compete at the Belle Fourche Invitational Thursday, April 24, at 10 a.m.
“It’s super early in the season still, so I’m not super worried about scores or anything. I’m just wanting them to get out and get some good rounds in, have some things to feel confident about and also figure out the things that we need to focus on,” said Uphoff.
