Game On: Mobile arcade now open

A new Custer business is bringing the classic arcade experience right to you. Within the space of a 28-foot trailer is a mobile arcade stocked with nostalgic arcade clasics as well as  newer games and consoles and even a VR racing simulator.
Ted Rainey, a long-time arcade lover, moved to Custer a couple years ago as he and his wife thought it would be a good place to raise a family. Now, Rainey is sharing his love of arcades and video games with the community through the Game On Video Game Truck.
“I saw this concept on the internet, and I’m like ‘that would be great for the Black Hills,’” said Rainey.
The whole arcade is located within the 28-foot climate-controlled trailer, and once booked, the whole set up can travel to wherever requested—perfect for birthday parties or rained-out events. For example, Game On can come right to your home, giving parents an easy birthday party option with no set up or cleaning.
“Parents can chill, stay at home, do their thing, and they know where their kids are, and they’re having fun,” said Rainey.
Walking in to the arcade, customers are hit with colorful lights and the sound of excitement.
“You want to be overwhelmed. I want to give that arcade ambiance—the music, the sounds, the screens, everything,” said Rainey.
Looking around, you’ll notice classic arcade cabinets and pinball—all with an impressive digital interface. For example, the pinball machine can play over 300 different boards—from the arcade classics to even newer Star Wars-themed boards.
“This is kind of a starting point, and eventually I’d love to get a brick and mortar with an actual retro and modern arcade,” said Rainey.
It’s all free-play rather than coin-operated, with customers paying by the hour, starting with two-hour bookings.
So far, Rainey says that Mario Kart, Smashbros and Rock Band have been the biggest draws, with the VR games also being extremely popular.
