Humble beginnings at Idyll & Humble

Idyll & Humble, a family-owned artisan bakery, started with humble beginnings and has now become an idyllic part of the community, just as the name implies.
Actually, the name Idyll & Humble is an homage to the Black Hills, created by owners Liz and Levi Warren.
“We chose the name Idyll & Humble because it represents our area perfectly to us: gorgeous, idyllic, while also humble in nature,” Liz said.
The Warrens moved to the Black Hills in 2021 and fell in love with its beauty and culture.
“I believe this is one of the prettiest and most incredible places. The culture and people here are so amazing,” said Liz.
Liz and Levi share their home and passion for baking with their five children ages 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9, who Liz said, “keep us busy and entertained, and sometimes even help out with the finishing touches on our treats.”
Liz is a self-taught baker, specializing in pies, pastries and danishes, breads and other goods. The pesto twists are a big seller, but not to be outdone by their homemade bread loaves that come in a variety of flavors like cranberry nut, Italian herb and cheese, and cheddar jalapeño.
Though their bread is the top seller, Liz enjoys “making pretty, festive things,” she said. Liz gives their goods a special, festive touch for each holiday, from ghosts at Halloween to holly leaves at Christmas.
“I think that’s why my stuff sells,” she said, “because it feels special.”
But it all started with pie. Liz enjoyed baking for her husband, Levi.
“He loves pie,” she said.
Levi encouraged her to start selling her delicious and beautiful pies.
“That was the original idea, just pies,” said Liz.
She began selling at the Deadwood Farmer’s Market and was then featured at Country Junkin’ and some of the bigger shows in Rapid City.
“We went commercial a year ago,” said Liz, “and I started doing wholesale for Dixon Coffee.”
Krulls Market also features a seasonal variety of Idyll & Humble’s baked goods, from different flavors of homemade bread, scones, cookies and sometimes cake.
“We can’t keep it in stock,” Liz said with a laugh.
The duo recently opened their new storefront on Main Street in Hill City, something that wasn’t originally in the plans.
The couple, tired of renting kitchen space from different places, was ready to have a place of their own to do their baking and creating.
“I wasn’t planning on a storefront,” said Liz. “I was mostly just doing it for the kitchen.”
She said, “We were like, ‘We should just open two days a week and see,’ and we’ve sold out, pretty much every day.”
Despite being open only two days a week, Liz is busy every day preparing for the weekend and fulfilling online and catering orders.
“We love creating delicious and beautiful goods from scratch, and sharing them with our community,” said Liz. “It’s a blessing, totally from God, the whole thing.”
