Wildcats take first at Custer Invitational

Right from the start of the season, the Custer High School Wildcat volleyball team is chasing its goal of making it to the SoDak16, having won its first match against Philip as well as the Custer Invitational tournament. 
“I would absolutely say that the hard work that was put in over the last years helped us coming into this season. We also had strong practices coming into the season and have a good team philosophy. We have high goals for our team this season, and the girls are ready to put the work into achieving those goals,” said head coach Jill Hohn. 

Soft start to the cross country season

The hilly terrain in Douglas proved to be challenging for Custer High School Wildcats during the first cross country meet of the season Aug. 29.
“It’s a hard course to start with,” said head coach Karen Karim. “I think some of our kiddos had some pretty solid performances. I know some of them are a little bit disappointed, but gosh, it’s the first meet and it really doesn’t matter at this point in time. So I think we accomplished what we needed to there.” 

Wildcats tighten the score against STM, Hot Springs

As the season rolls on, the Custer High School Wildcat soccer team is tightening the scores against its opponents. 
On Aug. 26, the Wildcats faced the St. Thomas More Cavaliers for an away game. Head coach Hannah Rehmeier said it was a good game for the Wildcats. 
Going into the half, the score was 2-1, with Xander Dinius scoring for the Wildcats. 
“Up until that point, that was probably the best game that we had played,” said Rehmeier. “We were working well as a team. We were pretty physical and staying together pretty well.”

Wildcat volleyball set for season

The Custer High School volleyball team is set for another season, having played its first matches last weekend. 
“I think we’re looking really good. We have a lot of girls out,” said head coach Jill Hohn. “We have a lot of skill within our program between C team and varsity, so we’re looking really good with our positions. We’re excited about this season.” 
Hohn has been coaching volleyball in some fashion since 2013. 

New faces compete for boys golf team

It was a relatively new set of faces that teed off for the Custer High School golf team last Thursday at the Joan Rachetto Invitational played at Tomahawk Golf Course south of Deadwood.
The top four regular varsity golfers for the Wildcats did not attend the event, opening the way for younger golfers to participate.
Among those was Brodie Van Der Boom, who normally serves as the Wildcats’ fifth golfer. In this meet, however, Van Der Boom was the ’Cats’ top golfer, and finished in 11th place with a 93.

Wildcat football battling low numbers

Low in numbers. High on the love of football.
Those two sentences sum up the Custer High School football team as it embarks on its 2025 campaign, as a relatively young but determined Wildcat team will kick off the season with around 30 players on the roster. For comparison, the Custer High School boys golf team has 26 members.
“It’s a little discouraging,” head coach Russ Evans said of the numbers, while adding he expected to pick up some players as school got going. “Practice has gone great. The guys seem to gel, they seem to get along and they’re working hard.”

Mustangs throttle ’Cats in opener

On the Tri-Valley Mustangs’ second play from scrimmage last Friday evening in Colton, Brody Dybvig took the handoff, went right, cut back the width of the field and raced 65 yards to the end zone.
It was that kind of evening for the Wildcat defense.
The homestanding Mustangs piled up 455 yards of offense on the night—including 348 on the ground—to overwhelm the Custer High School football team in a 53-3 Mustangs win that was called with about six minutes left in the game due to the mercy rule.

Xander Dinius scores first goal of the season in Wildcat loss

After two games showered with rain and lightning, the Custer High School Wildcat soccer team got more sunshine than they bargained for as players took to the soccer field Aug. 19 for an away game against the Belle Fourche Broncs. 
In the first half, the Wildcats started strong, keeping the score at 0-0 for the first 15 minutes or so.  

Boys golf team has record numbers

Bouyed by the largest numbers in the history of the program, the Custer High School boys golf team began its competitive season and already has a pair of tournaments under its belt.
The team has 26 participants, with head coach Paul Kelley calling those numbers both a good problem to have and a tad chaotic.
Of the 26 only four are truly beginners, meaning the team won’t be starting from scratch even if the younger players don’t have much in the way of tournament experience.

Cross country team off and running

The Custer High School Wildcats are heading to their first meet of the cross country season Friday, Aug. 29. 
The team is once again led by head coach Karen Karim. Karim has been coaching Custer cross country in some form since 1996 and has been the head coach since 2007.
