Wildcat golfers finish seventh at Cobbler Invite

Regan Sorenson’s 92 paced the Custer High School boys golf team as the Wildcats played their way to a seventh-place finish at the Cobbler Invitational Monday at Elks Golf Course in Rapid City.
Dillon Hanis and Curtis Sorenson carded the second-best score of the day for the Wildcats with a 94, while Brodie Van Der Boom shot a 95, Brady Virtue finished at 97 and Mason Dirkes rounded out the Wildcat entries with a 106.
Spearfish took the team title at the meet with a score of 313. Medalist was once again St. Thomas More’s Hayden Heig, who was three under par at 69.

Wildcats strike out but gain strength

Custer High School soccer brought the lightning but didn’t get to strike in the first games of the season. 
Things kicked off Friday, Aug. 15, with a home game against the Groton Tigers, and the Wildcats got off to a rough start, with the Tigers scoring a goal about 30 seconds into the game. Two more Tiger goals followed around six and eight minutes into the game. 

Golfers tee up season at Sturgis

The Custer High School boys team broke out the driver on its season Monday at Boulder Canyon Country Club for the Sturgis Invitational, where the team finished in third place.
Pacing the Wildcats was Regan Sorenson, who finished with a score of 81, good for seventh place overall.
Other Wildcats in the top 20 included Curtis Sorenson, who fired a round of 88, Brady Virtue, who finished at 90, and Mason Dirkes, who also shot 90. Rounding out the Wildcats in the tournament were Brodie VanDerBoom and Dillon Hanis, who both shot 97.

Soccer team kicks off fall sports Aug. 15

Grab your purple and gold from the back of your closet. Summer is coming to an end, and the Custer School District fall sport season kicks off with the first varsity soccer games Friday, Aug. 15 and Saturday, Aug. 16. 
Hannah Rehmeier is back to coach the Wildcat soccer team for her third year. Rehmeier grew up playing soccer, so she jumped at the opportunity to coach it. 
“This is my first time coaching a varsity team of any kind, so it’s definitely been a huge learning curve. But it’s been really good. It’s been something I’ve really enjoyed,” said Rehmeier.

Custer, Hill City to tangle in match play

Custer and Hill City golfers will tangle in a Ryder Cup-style match play competition this weekend at Rocky Knolls Golf Course.
The event is being called The Rushmore Cup at Rocky Knolls, and will be a 54-hole event pitting Wildcats vs. Rangers for bragging rights.
The event begins at noon Friday with a welcome social and team introductions, followed by first round play that is a nine-hole, two-man team scramble at 1:15 p.m. That will be followed by a nine-hole, two-man alternate shot competition.

Black Hills Night Brawl is Saturday

Custer Wildcat Wrestling is gearing up for a big weekend as Black Hills Night Brawl XI returns Saturday, July 12, bringing over 400 registered wrestlers and thousands of visitors to town for a full evening of wrestling action. The action will once again take place at the football field.
Athlete registration reached full capacity over a month ago, and the event continues to draw spectators from across the region. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for the outdoor setup.

Lehman, Karim, Bailey honored for track

The South Dakota Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches association has announced the recipients of the 2025 Area Track & Field Coaches of the Year awards. Among the winners were Custer High School head track coach Karen Karim and assistant coach Russ Bailey. Karim was named the Area 4 Coach of the Year, while Bailey was named the Area 4 Assistant Coach of the Year.
Coaches were selected by the association membership in recognition of their dedication, leadership and positive impact on student-athletes across South Dakota.

Rodeo team wraps up season at state

The Custer High School rodeo team wrapped up its season at last weekend’s state rodeo in Fort Pierre.
Avari Dorrance posted a time of 11.43 in the first round of goat tying and had a time of 8.60 to end up 25th in the average.
Cody Dirkes advanced to the short go in cutting, where he placed second and placed fifth overall in the event. The top four competitors from each event advance to the natoinal finals.

Wildcat rodeo competes at regions

The Custer High School rodeo team competed in the  region rodeo over the past few weeks, with the first round taking place in Wall June 6-8.
Custer placed second as a team with 162.5 points in the first round, led by several first-place finishes.
Cody Dirkes placed first in cutting in the first and second go-round.
Leighton Sander placed first in the first go in bareback with 66 points and in the second go he placed second with 69 points, winning the average for the weekend.
