Skogen chef receives James Beard Award nod

Wolfgang Puck, Bobby Flay, Anthony Bourdain, Alton Brown, Julia Child, Ina Garten and Jaques Pépin are just a few of the recognizable names of chefs who have been previously awarded a James Beard award, for which Chef Joseph Raney of Skogen Kitchen has just been named a semifinalist.
Raney was announced as a semifinalist for the prestigious award last Wednesday, Jan. 25. His nomination was in the Best Chef category for the midwest region. Raney says he is “blown away” by how much attention Skogen has received.

10 years ago, 2013 — The South Dakota National Guard planned to help the City of Custer excavate tons of silt from West Dam—but not until 2014. At a meeting of the Custer City Council the council learned of the National Guard’s plans, which would be part of the Guard’s annual training regimen around Custer each summer. Custer community development director Rex Harris said there was expected to be 30,000 to 35,000 cubic feet of silt dug out of the dam—enough to cover a football field with 20 feet of the material.

2:13 p.m.: A deputy picked up a prisoner at the Lawrence County Jail and transported the person to the Pennington County Jail where they were held on Custer County charges. This stuff gets complicated.

10 years ago, 2013 — A group of gun enthusiasts gathered at Southern Hills Tactical for a Gun Appreciation Day rally, an event led by gun-rights advocates who encouraged people to go to their local gun stores or gun ranges to show support for the Second Amendment, while also expressing opposition toward tighter gun regulations being proposed by Washington, D.C., which many see as an infringement on their Constitutional rights. Some at Custer’s rally came with a sidearm on their hip...The first official weigh-in for the Custer County Chronicle “Biggest Loser” contest was set.

7:34 a.m.: A deputy kicked off the week’s school patrolling in Custer.
10:58 a.m.: Theft of prescription pills was reported at Custer’s Valley-Hi Apartments. A suspect was identified and charges may be pending.
12:25 p.m.: A deputy helped an out-of-state agency with a case in the Custer area.
5:29 p.m.: A deputy helped with an emergency medical call on Beaver Creek Road.
6:47 p.m.: Deputies arrested a 24-year-old Custer male for a probation violation at a Custer tavern.

10 years ago, 2013 — Officials from the Custer School District, City of Custer and Custer County were set to meet to review and discuss the school district’s security policy in the wake of the mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., that left 26 dead, including 20 children.

Custer man named Show Trainer of the Year

Doing what he’s passionate about is paying off for Custer horse trainer Randy Guggisberg. He will travel from his place on Pleasant Valley Road west of Custer to Fort Pierre on Saturday where he will be honored as the 2022 Legacy Show Trainer of the Year for South Dakota.
Guggisberg, who runs Sliding G Performance Horses, raises and trains performance horses, mainly reining and rope horses. He also rides them in shows across the nation for his clients.
