 Sunday, Nov. 13
7:48 p.m.: Deputies were back at Landover Estates again for another ambulance call.
10:36 p.m.: More calls came in from folks concerned about the elderly female, who was now apparently walking through Custer. Deputies checked the area but she had mysteriously vanished...or got a motel room, as she had earlier told a deputy.

Tension between Noem, legislature stalls workforce housing

The sometimes strained relationship between Republican Gov. Kristi Noem and the GOP-led Legislature has led in part to delayed implementation of a $200 million program aimed at building critical workforce housing in South Dakota.
In a series of emails sent to South Dakota News Watch, the Republican governor and a prominent GOP senator each blamed the other for the failure of the program to launch on time.

10 years ago, 2012 — In a night with emotional speeches, facts, figures and pleas to keep the rural schools open, the Custer School Board voted 4-3 to close Fairburn and Spring Creek schools beginning with the 2013-14 school year. After the motion was voted on, board member Larry Vickers got up, collected his items and flipped over his nameplate, resigning from the board. The schools were closed due to budget constraints within the school district...A mountain lion met its fate on Carroll Creek Road, five miles south of Custer Nov. 5 after deciding to rest on the porch of a family’s home.

Monday, Nov. 7
7:14 a.m.: A deputy checked on an abandoned vehicle just east of Hermosa on Hwy. 40.
7:15 a.m.: Deputies patrolled school zones in Custer and Hermosa.
10:53 a.m.: A deputy assisted other agencies with the search for a rifle-armed bank robbery suspect that was possibly on the run from Oglala Lakota County. The suspect was scooped up later in the week in another state.
11:06 a.m.: Harassing text messages were reported on 3rd Street in Fairburn. No charges are pending at this time.

10 years ago, 2012 —In the race for state representative, Rep. Kristi Noem defeated Democratic opponent Matt Varilek with over 58 percent of the vote. In Custer County, Noem had nearly 70 percent of the vote. At 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, President Barack Obama won the Presidental race, earning a second term, with 274 electoral votes. Republican opponent Mitt Romney had 203 votes.

Monday, Oct. 31
7:23 a.m.: Deputies began another week of school patrolling in Custer.
8:11 a.m.: A horse was lost and then found on Willow Creek Road.
8:31 a.m.: Speeding high schoolers were reported in the Willow Creek Road area. It seems unusual for youths to be anxious to get to school.
10:29 a.m.: A deputy attempted to deliver a death notification in the Custer are but was unable to contact any next-of-kin.
10:30 a.m.: A deputy assisted another agency with a much-belated investigation in the Custer area.

Space dreams lead to military career

Retired Lt. Col. John Heaton of Custer spent more than three decades serving his country in the United States Air Force. During that time he worked on nuclear missiles, flew B-52s during the Cold War and helped shore up NATO air defense systems in southern Europe, but what drew him into the U.S. military in the first place was a boyhood dream of becoming an astronaut and someday walking on the moon.

10 years ago, 2002 —An upscale full color magazine featuring a number of local contributors in its November-December issue was to be available at over 150 locations in the Black Hills. Down Country Roads, a bi-monthly magazine celebrating the rural lifestyle, was produced by Southern Hills Publishing, Inc. in Custer. Editor was Norma Najacht with contributing local writers Amy Kirk of Pringle, Dana Kizzier of Hermosa and Bev Pechan of Keystone.
