Friday, Aug. 26
11:42 a.m.: A deputy assisted Custer State Park personnel with the search for a reported vehicle crash on the Wildlife Loop Road. No one ever found it.
1:59 p.m.: A suspicious male reportedly leaned against the side of a parked vehicle on Custer’s north 10th street before disappearing, probably forever.
1:59 p.m.: A lost revolver was reported somewhere between Custer State Park and Hot Springs. If you find such a thing, give us a call, all right?

Studebaker show names winners

Several elements combined to make the 2022 Labor Day Studebaker Events in Custer a successful three days from Sept. 3-5. Thirty four cars and trucks manufactured from the 1930s through the 1980s, and in both restored and modified conditions, were shown at the Sunday car and truck show. Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC) participants from 10 states and one Canadian province brought many different models of Studebakers and one Packard.

10 years ago, 2012 —The Custer County Weed and Pest Department was without any full-time employees after its director, field supervisor and two other full-time employees resigned last month in the wake of what the former director called “unethical conduct” by some members of the Custer County Commission. Bill Kirsch, who resigned as director of the department Aug. 24, said he wasn’t at liberty to go into detail about the chain of events that led to the resignations...Cody Martinz and Tori Dahlstrom were selected king and queen of Custer High School homecoming...A temple?

Sunday, Aug. 14
6:10 p.m.: A wandering dog was returned to its owners in East Custer.
6:27 p.m.: Deputies rushed to a family dispute on Hoover Court just west of Custer. The main instigator had fled on foot before the law got there but deputies soon found the 29-year-old Custer male and arrested him on an active warrant from another county.
8:46 p.m.: Deputies checked on a possibly suicidal person in Custer County. The person turned out to be all right after all.
9:16 p.m.: A deputy gave directions to lost tourists east of Custer along Hwy. 16A.

Chambers join forces to make an impact

Hill City’s Heart of the Hills Economic Development Corporation (EDC), along with Custer area’s EDC, are hosting a community leadership program entitled Impact.
 
Impact is for either Hill City or Custer community members who may be emerging leaders, new to the community or wanting to improve their leadership skills. 
 

Down Memory Lane Aug. 31

10 years ago, 2012 —For the first time in four years, the City of Custer gave its employees a 3 percent Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). The Custer City Council agreed to include the COLA in the 2013 budget, along with a change to the step scale under which employees receive raises.

Quilted Buffalo now open

Custer has a new shop featuring fabric, quilting supplies and yarn: the Quilted Buffalo.
The Quilted Buffalo opened this summer at 36 S. 6th St. and owner Stacy Fickbohm has an array of products, patterns and quilt knowledge.
Fickbohm’s idea for the Quilted Buffalo first came about because she was simply a quilter in Custer looking for a quilt shop closer than Edgemont.
Fickbohm suggested to her family, “We should open a quilt shop” and after months of hard work, The Quilted Buffalo’s doors opened in May.

Friday, Aug. 12
12:57 p.m.: A deputy checked on what appeared to be a discarded freezer in the road ditch by East French Creek Road near Fairburn. It was full of rotting food and will be carted off by the highway department in the future.
1:05 p.m.: Found eyeglasses were turned in at the sheriff’s office. If you can see well enough to read this, they probably aren’t yours.
1:48 p.m.: A speeding SUV was seen west of Custer on Hwy. 16. A deputy found the motorized menace and dealt with them.
