Sales tax numbers for the month of May are down 23 percent when compared to the same time last year. And BBB (bed booze and board) taxes are down 45 percent from last year.
In addition, at least 12 businesses failed to renew their business license by the June 1 deadline.
“Twelve is a large number for us,” Ott said. “Usually we have two or three that don’t renew. Owners may be hesitant to renew if they are not yet open since there is no penalty if you’re not open and have not renewed.”
