Be prepared for winter weather

As winter approaches, National Weather Service forecasters encourage people to prepare for extreme snow and cold conditions by taking the following actions.
 
Make sure your vehicle is ready for cold temperatures by having its battery, antifreeze, wipers and windshield washer, thermostat and tires checked.
 

Courthouse seeks time capsule donations

As part of the centennial celebration of the 1922 Courthouse, Pennington County is seeking donations of items for a time capsule that will be placed in 2022 to mark the start of another 100 years of history.
 
The county is asking for citizens to donate stories, memories and mementos representative of the people, cultures and communities that make up Pennington County. 
 

Pillen added to Black Hills Military Honor Roll

The Black Hills Military Honor Roll recognizes local military members who gave their lives for freedom in our nation’s wars and raises public awareness of the Black Hills War Monument and ensure our children and grandchildren never forget the price paid for their freedom. 
 
The names of the heroes listed on the Walls of Honor at the War Monument site will ensure their service and sacrifice can be officially recognized.  Their info will also be on the BHWMA.ORG website. 
 

Tax applications available

 Application forms are now available for Pennington County tax payers wishing to sign up for automatic incremental tax payments for the 2022 payable 2023 tax year.
 
The direct payment plan divides up the current year taxes owed into 10 automatic withdrawals starting in January. 
 
Pennington County Treasurer Janet Sayler states this program assists taxpayers with a balanced billing from January through October for their property tax payments. 
 

Veterans Day lunch Nov. 11

The Hill City Seniors will host a free Veterans Day luncheon Nov. 11 at 11:30am at the Hill City Center. The menu consists of ham and scalloped potatoes, green beans, jello salad and desert. The group is  working on a speaker for the program through the American Legion.
 
Those who plan to attend are asked RSVP to the center at 574-3211. Messages can be left if no one answers.

Park offers free programs at library

Sending a reminder the next Friends of Library meeting is 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at City Hall. Charlotte Cushman, an educator and author, will be the presenter for the program. These are great programs and everyone is welcome to attend.
 
 

Library hosts writing workshop

The Keystone Library will be hosting “The Heirlooms: Creative Life Story Writing Workshop”  on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 6 p.m.
 
The free workshop is sponsored by the South Dakota Humanities Council. 
 
Adults of all ages are welcome to attend the  interactive workshop which requires participation in written exercises.  All levels of writing experience are welcome. Participants should bring their own writing materials, electronic or pen and paper, to the workshop.
 

Use fees set for center

Use fees have been set for the Hill City Center. Aldermen approved the rates at the Oct. 24 meeting of the Hill City Council. The fees are based on similar sized towns with and  without professional  kitchens in their community centers. After speaking with some nonprofit groups in town, board president Carl Doaty was concerned with the rate  nonprofits would be charged  for renting  the entire building. 
 
“A lot of them say if they have to pay $75 for the entire  building they’re not sure they’ll have events there,” he said. 

Push made for greater Native American voting access

A recent court ruling that found South Dakota violated federal voting registration laws has reignited the long-standing concern over Native American ballot access as the state braces for a 2022 gubernatorial election that could hinge on Indian Country precincts.
 
In a state with nearly 78,000 Indigenous residents, comprising 8.8 percent of the population, advocates of greater Native enfranchisement have worked to enlist new voters in areas such as the Pine Ridge and Rosebud reservations that lean left-of-center politically.
 

Tempers flare over Keystone burn ordinance

The first reading of the new burn ordinance in Keystone took place at the Oct. 19 town board meeting. Tempers were fiery as Trustees Casey McNulty and Bill Babock voted against the ordinance. 
 
“Why are we limiting scrap?” McNulty asked. He was sparked specifically by the idea that pallets would be prohibited from slash piles.
