Housing for elderly brought to board

Several issues with Keystone’s elderly housing were brought to the town’s attention at the Sept. 21 Keystone Town Board meeting. 
 
In an effort to have housing built, Keystone’s Town Board created the Town of Keystone Commission on Housing for the Elderly in 1992.
 
In 1995 housing was constructed using a $350,000 federal farm home loan. However, that loan was tied to the commission itself, not the town, because the commission had its own Employer Identification Number.
 

Buffalo Roundup this weekend

The Governor’s Buffalo Roundup starts this week with essentially something for everyone as there’s the roundup, an arts and crafts festival and the Crazy Horse Volksmarch. 
 
Custer State Park’s Buffalo Roundup is now a 57-year tradition where the public is invited to watch as approximately 1,300 buffalo are herded into corrals.
 
South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks uses the help of many local citizens on horseback and in designated vehicles to run the dense herd of buffalo. 
 

Celebrate Chautauqua in Keystone Oct. 8

The West River History conference will celebrate Chautauqua in Keystone Oct. 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
 
The day features music, speakers, vendors and tours, and the public is welcome to attend. Since 1993, the conference has been a way of preserving the historic record of western South Dakota, and the Black Hills.

Museum roof to be repaired

There was  a lot of structural discussion at the Sept. 21 Keystone Town Board meeting. 
 
One structure that was discussed is the Keystone Museum. The town received two bids to replace the roof damaged by hail. Both bids were within $100 of each other. 
 
Raintite’s bid included snow guards while Weathertite did not. In addition, Raintite’s bid included the permit fee while Weathertite did not. The building does not currently have snow guards on the roof.
 

State releases public lands movies

The South Dakota Department of Tourism has announced the release of a short film focused on Buffalo Gap National Grassland. This release marks the final film of a three-part series highlighting South Dakota’s public lands.
 
“Putting a focus on the incredible resource that Buffalo Gap National Grassland offers is an exciting opportunity for us,” said James Hagen, secretary of the South Dakota Department of Tourism. “Buffalo Gap surrounds the incredibly popular Badlands National Park but has remained one of South Dakota’s most beautiful hidden gems.”

Election signs not allowed in ROW

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) reminds the public that political campaign and ballot-issue signs cannot be placed on state highway rights-of-way.  
 
“Election signs are showing up along the state’s roadways,” says Craig Smith, director of operations. “Illegal signs create a safety hazard and may distract motorists from seeing important regulatory or directional signing.” 
 

Lynn’s Dakotamart ceases Prevailer inserts

Beginning this week, there will no longer be Lynn’s Dakotamart inserts in the Hill City Prevailer. Lynn’s Dakotamart has decided to discontinue putting its inserts within the paper.
 
Printed copies will still be available within the store, and Lynn’s Dakotamart is allowing people to sign up to have the weekly ad emailed to them by visiting lynnsdakotamart.com.
 
In addition, the Prevailer’s website, myblackhillscountry.com, has the insert near the top of its homepage.
 

End of summer event supports ambulance

Back to back events to benefit the Hill City Ambulance Service took place this past Saturday. 
 
The Lions Club bingo and the first annual Hilltoberfest both drew people from in town and outlying communities. 
 
Cora Koss from Rapid City was excited to attend the street dance with her family. Koss came to Hill City decades ago to street dance, and was happy to see the event return. 
 

Slow-go for Keystone tourism season

The Keystone tourist season was a mixed bag, depending on who you ask. Robin Pladson, executive director of the Keystone Area Chamber of Commerce, said Keystone’s season was “moderately matched previously to 2021.”
 
Tom Hagen from Rush Mountain Adventure Park and Sprockets Fun Foundry described the season as slightly down when compared to 2019.
 
“In tourism lingo, we would call our season ‘soft,’” he said.
