Track team places third at BHC

The Hill City High School Track and Field team had a notable performance at the Black Hills Conference (BHC) meet in Custer last Tuesday, with 33 all-conference performances, nine championships, 61 new personal records (PR) and several broken school records. 
The team didn’t go into the BHC meet with expectations of placing. They went with preparation in mind. 
“Our conference meet was, what do we need to run at conference to be prepared for state? That’s how I approach it,” said head coach Joe Noyes. 

Track team competes in Sturgis

Personal records continued to fall and state qualifications continued to be made as the Custer High School track team competed in a pair of track meets in Sturgis last week.
The Wildcats competed against large schools from around the region at last Saturday’s Black Hills Track Classic, and came home with one championship—Karyn Ellerton in the discus. Her toss of 130-0 continued her “winning ways,” head coach Karen Karim said.

It was a cold day in Hot Springs for the Custer High School girls golf team at the Southern Hills Invitational May 7.
Head coach Paul Kelley said the golf course was difficult, but the athletes competed well and continued to show improvement.
Maggie Lewison placed 23rd with a 114, and Makeda Sumption placed 29th with a 121.
“Makeda played it for the first time, and Maggie played it for the second time, and they showed the most improvement,” said Kelley.

Rangers continue to top greens

On May 8, the Hill City Rangers golf team played a short par-63 course at the  Ft. Pierre tournament.
The team finished second overall with Zane Messick and Breylon Rahn tying for second individually.
Messick sunk a hole in one on the third hole, using a 50-degree wedge on the 120-yard shot. 
The team stayed local to play at the Black Hills Classic at the Hart Ranch Golf Course May 11.
The team finished fourth overall.
Rahn was five over par, placing second for the day with a score of 77.

Frandsen breaks hurdle record again

For the second week in a row, Hill City High School senior Andee Frandsen has broken the school record in the girls 100 hurdles. This week, she did it at Woodle Field in Sturgis at the Black Hills Track Classic  Saturday.
Last week, Frandsen ran a 15.75, her personal best time as well as the fastest in school history—until this week when she bettered her time and once again reset the school record with 15.50, moving her to the top five in the state.

Wildcats get home course advantage

The sudden winter weather put a damper on the Custer Jr./Sr. High School golf plans as the Belle Fourche Pre-Black Hills Conference and Pre-Region Invite as well as the Douglas Golf Meet were cancelled. Unable to practice outdoors, the Wildcats retreated to Xtreme Sports in Custer to use its simulator.
“That’s become a big thing with golf,” said head coach Paul Kelley. “A lot of schools are picking those up. It hurts sometimes. You can putt on a simulator, but it’s just a lot different. ”

Stiefel sets new record at Howard Wood

Custer High School freshman Tenlee Stiefel soared to new heights at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays last Saturday in Sioux Falls, breaking her own school record in the pole vault and breaking the meet record as well.
The former meet record holder is the same person whose school record she broke as well—big sister, Ciana.
Stiefel vaulted 13-1 at the meet, grabbing the gold medal and raising the bar on her school record by an inch.
“That is pretty awesome,” head coach Karen Karim said. “She still has room to go higher. You can see it in her clearances.”

Rangers remain fresh on greens

With a team score of 232, the Hill City Rangers squeaked into first place by one stroke over Philip at the Elks Challenge, hosted by the Wall Eagles, in Rapid City April 30. 
“I was visiting with coach Haynes of Philip and coach Walker from Wall about how competitive Region 6 is this year, and it showed today,” said coach Josh Daiss. “We were able to get the best of both of those teams today and will have to continue to play at a high level to hold them off for the rest of the season.” 

Rangers run east river in two meets

The Rangers track team traveled to the east side of the state to take advantage of two different meets over the weekend. 
The Rangers performed well, competing in the biggest and most historic track-and-field event in the Upper Midwest—The Howard Wood Relays in Sioux Falls as well as the O’Gorman Invite.

’Cats deal with shuffled meets

It was a busy week for athletes on the Custer High School track team, as members of the team competed in a meet in some form or fashion for three straight days last week, starting in Rapid City and ending in Pierre.
The American Legion Dakota Relays in Pierre were supposed to be held last Saturday, but were bumped up to Thursday due to weather.
