Wildcat volleyball takes one win, one loss

Although tired from the long season, the Custer High School Wildcats are still putting up a fight, walking away with one win against Mahpíya Lúta and a close game against St. Thomas More (STM).
After the long drive to Pine Ridge Oct. 14, head volleyball coach Jill Hohn said the girls were tired.
“We ended up with a win, so we were happy with that. We didn’t play our best, but it’s a long trip there, and we just have some tired girls. But we got the job done,” said Hohn.
The Wildcats won 25-18, 25-20 and 25-21.

Wildcats can’t douse Comets

It was another case of the Wildcats striking first and the opposition striking often last Friday at the Custer High School football field.
The visiting Comets of Rapid City Christian rattled off 41 unanswered points following the Wildcats taking a 3-0 lead during a 41-10 Comet win that saw Custer finish its 2025 home slate winless.

A play by play of the voice behind the Hill City Rangers football team

Hill City Rangers football fans hear the familiar voice announcing everything from players to fundraisers to how to support the booster club at each home game. 
That voice belongs to John Knapp, who sits perched above the 50 yard line of Ranger Field in the announcer’s stand, referred to as the crow’s nest. 
Knapp was the game announcer for 37 years,  although not continuously. He had a 33-year stint, then a job that prevented him from making the start of the games, and has now been back at it the last four years. 

Cross country teams carry the torch to state

It was a rainy, cold and dreary day at Hart Ranch  for the Region 5A Cross Country Meet Thursday, but both teams came away walking on sunshine.
Using the momentum from their second place team finish at the Black Hills Conference meet, the girls team pushed themselves to new limits to become the Region 5A champions and setting several personal and season records.

Ranger volleyball wins one, loses one at home

The Hill City High School volleyball team went head to head against St. Thomas More (STM) last Tuesday night in the Gins Gym for a volleyball match-up. 
It was a hard-fought battle that stretched five sets of volleyball action. 
St. Thomas More came out strong in the first set, hanging onto the lead throughout, ending 25-17.

Rangers run to success at conference

The Hill City Rangers made a strong statement at the Black Hills Conference (BHC) Cross Country Championship meet Thursday, Oct. 9, turning in several standout performances at Rocky Knolls Golf Course in Custer.
Senior Tate Grabow led the charge for the Rangers, capturing the boys’ individual title with a time of 16:43.61. 
“16:43 on that course is stellar,” said head coach Joe Noyes
Grabow took the lead early on and started to pull away midway through the race and never looked back, finishing nearly 40 seconds ahead of the runner-up. 

Rangers rise at the net for homecoming

The crowd pulsed with homecoming energy Tuesday night as the Rangers stormed the court, dropping Mahpíya Lúta in a decisive three-set win (25-10, 25-10, 25-20) inside a packed Gins Gym.
From the opening serve, the Rangers controlled the game, showing confidence on both sides of the net. Coach Allie Henderson was able to use the full roster, which was a rewarding opportunity on the home court.

Rangers tame Kougars to extend season

The Hill City Rangers football team ended their regular season with a 51-16 win against the Kadoka Kougars. The win leaves the Rangers with a 7-1 record and a chance to play in the post season.
Head football coach Brett Eckert called the regular season exciting. 

Penalties stymie Wildcat comeback

With just over four minutes left in its game last Friday evening against visiting Belle Fourche, the Custer High School football team took possession of the ball on its own 37 yard line.
The Wildcats trailed 18-14 and were looking for some fourth-quarter magic to provide their second win of the season.
Instead, they got visited by an old nemesis.
At the beginning of the possession, running back Danny Immormino, who piled up 132 more rush yards in the game, broke off a long run that put the ball near the Belle Fourche 30.

Curtis Sorenson top 25 at state meet

The Custer High School golf team had its first medalist at the state golf meet in a number of years, as sophomore Curtis Sorenson pulled off the feat at the Class A State Golf Meet Oct. 6-7 in Vermillion.
“Curtis played good golf. I know there are a few shots he would like to have a few shots back, but that’s how golf works,” head coach Paul Kelley said. “Curtis is only a sophomore. He has two more years at it. You’d like to see him move up and keep improving over the next couple of years.”
