Wildcats hit with the heat at Hart Ranch

The Custer Jr./.Sr High School cross country team stumbled into a scorcher at the Rapid City Area Schools High School Invitational at Hart Ranch Sept. 26. With a 1 p.m. start for the varsity boys and a 1:30 p.m. start for the varsity girls, it was around 87 degrees. 
“It was hot, and windy, and dusty and not what our kids are used to. A couple of them kind of melted, and we had some kids that felt sick from the weather and from the heat,” said coach Karen Karim. “It’s just not that hot in Custer most of the time.” 

Tate Grabow races in California

Hill City’s top cross country runner, Tate Grabow, was selected to race at the 44th Annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic Boys Sweepstakes Race in Irvine, Calif. that took place last Saturday. 
The two-day event involved over 16,000 participants, inviting top teams and elite individual runners from across the United States, running in several heats. 
“They started a race before the last one finished just so they could get races through faster,” said Grabow. 

Ranger volleyball hits hot streak

The Hill City Rangers volleyball team is riding a wave of momentum, stacking up wins on their home court and on the road and against tough tournament competition.
Last Tuesday, the Rangers lit up Gins Gym in a dominant sweep of the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers (25-12, 25-16, 25-21). Thursday, Hill City carried that fire on the road, rolling past the Newell Irrigators in another straight-set victory (25-14, 25-10, 25-15).

The Hill City Rangers cross country team is beginning to wrap up the regular season and head into “championship season,” according to head coach Joe Noyes. 
The Rangers ran at the Rapid City Area Schools High School Invitational Cross Country Meet at Hart Ranch Friday. According to Noyes, the team showed some end of season fatigue but also showed mental resilience and came away with some notable performances. 

Power of the Rangers stops Warriors

The Bennett County Warriors came out to play against the Hill City Rangers Sept. 26, and the opening kickoff return to the 40-yard line by Caleb Sobolik showed the Warriors Hill City was there to play too.
The Rangers moved  fast, coming to the line of scrimmage quickly on all three plays of their opening drive. Ranger quarterback Brensen Veneklasen tried to connect long to Nick Schroeder on a third and 10, but Warriors coverage was good and Rangers were forced to punt the ball.

Rangers tee up for one off fall match

Despite its golf season occurring in the spring, the Ranger boys golf team competed in the Black Hills Conference golf tournament at the Rocky Knolls Golf Course Sept. 23.   Most of the Black Hills Conference schools are Class A or AA for golf and play in the fall. The Rangers, a Class B team, are invited to the tournament because they are a Black Hills Conference school.
The Rangers took fourth place, finishing behind St. Thomas More, Spearfish and Sturgis. 

Boys first, girls third at Custer Invite

Although the Custer High School Wildcats were using the Eldon Knudson Invitational Cross Country Meet at Rocky Knolls Golf Course as a training run, the boys walked away with a first place finish. 
“That wasn’t the primary goal when we ran it. I just wanted them to be on the course, to get a good workout in and to again run solidly as a team and pull each other along,” said head coach Karen Karim. 
Kian Rusch and Peyton Krueger ran stride for stride throughout the race, taking fourth at 18:16.16 and fifth at 18:17.31, respectively. 

Wildcats wrap up soccer season

For 60 percent of the game, the Custer Jr./Sr. High School soccer team dominated its home field, putting in 26 shots on goal, according to Hudl results. The ’Cats ended the season with a 4-2 loss to the Hot Springs Bison Sept. 16, but not without putting up a fight. 

Wildcats scratched at homecoming games

It was a challenging week for the Custer High School volleyball team, with two losses over homecoming. 
At the Armory Sept. 16, the Wildcats faced off against the St. Thomas More Cavaliers. Initially, the Wildcats came out strong, but the Cavaliers struck back hard. After that, it became a battle of the mind for the ’Cats. The Cavaliers won the first set 25-16.

Out of the frying pan, into the fire.
The Custer High School football team concluded its brutal four-game stretch to open the season last Friday evening at Wildcat Field, falling 50-0 via mercy rule to St. Thomas More. The game was Custer’s homecoming contest.
Having played a murderer’s row of some of the top teams in Class A and Class B to start the season, Custer head coach Russ Evans said St. Thomas More was the most physically imposing on the lines of scrimmage of all the teams the Wildcats have squared off with.
