Lure of rally brings newbies, die hards back

In 2001, Spencer Olson made his way on his 1996 Harley Davidson Springer Softail to his first Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. 
“I had heard about it, and it looked fun so I rode out,” the now 62-year-old said. 
He was living in Savage, Minn., at the time and took Hwy. 212 across the state, coming into Sturgis from the north. He pitched a tent at Suzie’s Camp, his rally home away from home for the next 10 years.

New displays at Keystone Museum

A new display at the Keystone  Museum  highlights the Haunting of Keystone. 
The display prominently features the 2023 Peter Norbeck Excellence in Tourism Innovation  Award that the Haunting received in recognition of the event’s ongoing development  to enhance visitor experiences in South Dakota.

—The inaugural Saturday in the Park—Music on the Green held Aug. 1 was a success, according to Janet Wetovick-Bily, executive director of the Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce. The nice, cool weather on that day was a big help, and the visitors and local attendees were fun to visit with, Wetovick-Bily said...A memorial bench celebrating the life of Bev Pechan would now adorn Keystone Cemetery. The bench was donated by her son, Paul Pechan, as a way to commemorate the ties his mom had to Keystone and the Black Hills.

Pay what you can, laugh all you want

The Black Hills Playhouse will be wrapping up its 79th season with a final act, “The Book of Will,” from Aug. 10-16, featuring eight official performances, and an additional “pay-what-you-can” preview performance Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Serving as the final dress rehearsal, this unique showing allows audiences to experience the live theatre without the pressure of a ticket price.
“We like to make sure everyone gets the opportunity to experience the production,” said Kassi Blue-Scates of the Black Hills Playhouse. 

Locally owned signs spark pride in businesses

If you’ve strolled down Main Street lately, you may have noticed something new catching your eye: simple but powerful signs that proudly read, “Locally Owned.” These markers of community pride are the work of Hill City resident and small business owner  Wesley Murphey.
Murphey, owner of Black Hills Carved Signs, has been crafting custom redwood signs in Hill City for the past 12 years. He created the locally owned signage as a way to highlight and support fellow local businesses.

Sturgis rally-goers visiting Keystone and Hill City this year might notice a few changes along with the familiar traditions.
One new change is parking in Keystone, which for the first time ever will be bikes only on the east (boardwalk) side of Winter Street. This is in addition to the state parking lot which will be bikes only for a $3 fee. 
Cars can park on the west (non-boardwalk) of Winter Street and along Swanzey Street or in various private lots throughout town. The parking restrictions begin Aug. 1 and run through Aug. 10.

Local organizations brought flair, fragrance to area

People in the Black Hills were busy this weekend as both Keystone and Hill City played host to two unique events.
The Keystone Park Board hosted its first ever Art in the Park event Saturday. The all-day indoor /outdoor festival featured children’s activities, crafts and vendors, live music and food trucks. Most importantly, it was an opportunity for people to support the park board and its vision for the future of Keystone parks.
