—Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom and S.D. Highway Patrol superintendent Col. Rick Miller have filed suit in Hughes County to block Constitutional Amendment A, which would legalize recreational marijuana in the state ... Ornaments from Hill City High School will be on display with the 2020 National Christmas Tree display on the Ellipse in President’s Park in Washington, D.C. Hill City High School is representing the state of South Dakota this year. The district said on Facebook that this was facilitated by teacher Chad Ronish.

Donating purses for a purpose

For over a decade, the Hill City Community has been donating purses for a purpose in a charitable initiative called The Purse Project.
Organized by Sue Anderson of Hill City, it collects gently used or new purses along with new personal and essential filler items. These are assembled into gift bags that are donated to the Cornerstone Women’s and Children’s Home in Rapid City and  Women Escaping a Violent Environment (WEAVE) in Custer. 
Larger purses are especially appreciated as they hold more donated items.

Shop till you drop at Kris Kringle Nov. 28-29

The annual Kris Kringle Craft and Vendor Fair is Nov. 28-29. Organizer Stefanie Doaty said she is excited about this year’s event. 
“I think it’s the best one so far,” Doaty said. 
With 46 vendors and a half dozen on a waitlist, the fair is the largest craft fair  Hill City has. 
“It’s really awesome,” Doaty said. “This used to be in the old senior center. Ranae Schrier moved it to the school. It was in the cafeteria gym. Then, it went to the Burden gym. When I took it over, I was like, ‘We’re gonna utilize both gyms.’” 

Hill City Ambulance open house Dec. 6

Before the concrete was poured and the walls took shape, the foundation of Hill City’s new Ambulance Service building was already in place—the community that supported it. 
After rallying together from bake sales to bingo cards, the hometown that fueled and funded the new ambulance building is invited to celebrate its completion with a holiday-themed open house Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

— A Memorial Chapel at Mountain View Cemetery in Keystone was donated by Carolyn Clifford to mark the passing of her husband, Nick, who passed away in 2019 ... The Hill City Rangers volleyball team finished eighth at the state Class A tournament in Watertown ... The children of Gary and Linda Daiss happily announced their parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Gary and Linda were married Nov. 27, 1970, in the bride’s hometown of Howard. The couple have lived in Hill City since 1976.

Honoring our Veterans

The Hill City High School Student Council hosted its annual Veterans Day program in Gins Gym last Tuesday, gathering students, staff and community members to honor local veterans and current service members.
“We are here to honor and remember all the people who have served in the armed forces. We would also like to remind you to keep our current service members in your hearts and thoughts as they serve us today,” said Jordan Duprey, who, along with Phoebe Bentley-Buschur, lead the ceremony. 

Turkey Bingo, Victorian Christmas supports Keystone

This year’s Victorian Christmas and Keystone Turkey Bingo will feature 19 vendors, 10 turkeys and two hams.
Sandi McLain from Holy Terror Days Inc., which is once again organizing the vendor fair, said Victorian Christmas is a way to “come see unique products. People sell handcrafted items that you would not see anywhere else. It’s also an opportunity to come for fun. Along with seeing Santa.”
Vendors this year include people selling jewelry, plants, antique items and homemade foods.
