Two girls, one heart

Hill City music teacher Alyssa Pena and her husband RJ were eagerly expecting their first baby this year. What they weren’t expecting—twins. But these siblings didn’t share just a womb, they also share a heart.
At a routine ultrasound in January, Alyssa and RJ’s world shifted as they learned that Alyssa was carrying conjoined twins, an extraordinarily rare and often life-threatening condition. The two girls are joined at the chest, sharing pieces of their hearts and liver. 
From that day forward, life became a journey of hope, faith and strength. 

Officials encouraging people to ‘Hike Smart’

“Western South Dakota is beautiful, but it can also be unpredictable,” states the new Unified Hiker Safety Campaign for Western South Dakota. 
In response to a sharp rise in calls for hikers in distress who were not adequately prepared for the conditions and unfamiliar environment, emergency management crews across the western part of the state have launched the campaign initiative, urging hikers to be prepared and practice caution before hitting the trails.

From school supplies to kids clothing, the community is stepping up to ease the strain for parents and teachers alike.

The Grass Wagon, located on Hill City Main Street, is already making an impression with its locally sourced goods, antiques and one-of-a-kind gifts and home decor. The new boutique has rolled into town, offering a cozy mix of rustic charm, handcrafted treasures and a friendly face to greet you at the door.
“Hi, folks. Come on in,” owner Christine Richardson cheerfully greeted visitors as they stepped inside.

Telemedicine in EMTs corner

In an effort to support local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies and the communities they serve, the South Dakota Department of Health, in partnership with Avel eCare, is working on a project known as Telemedicine in Motion, and the Hill City Ambulance Service has already implemented this cutting edge technology. 
According to the South Dakota Department of Health (SDDOH) website, Telemedicine in Motion for EMS is a statewide initiative designed to provide telemedicine services to EMS agencies throughout the State of South Dakota. 

Opportunities to bloom abound at flower show

The Hill City Evergreen Garden Club will hold its annual flower show July 26 at the Hill City Center. This year’s theme is Hills in Bloom. 
The club is still accepting entries to the show.
Guidelines for entry categories are on the Hill City Evergreen Garden Club  Facebook page or within brochures located at local businesses. General categories include annuals, perennials, wildflowers, container gardens, arrangements, table settings as well as childrens and business/organization categories.
