Two of Custer’s premier athletes were in Des Moines, Iowa, late July into early August to test themselves against the best athletes in the nation.
And they’re both over 70 years old.
Dan and Michelle Hutt were both competitors in the 2025 National Senior Games July 24-Aug. 4, having both qualified for the games in more than one event by winning state championships the year prior.

11:15 p.m.: A deputy checked on a pedestrian who fell down next to a parked motorcycle in front of a downtown Custer tavern. The male said he was fine and was not planning on riding away, but…
11:20 p.m.: …the now-former pedestrian attempted to become a motorcycle rider and was promptly stopped by the deputy and eventually arrested for DUI.

8:22 a.m.: A set of car keys attached to a Chicago Bears keychain was lost on Custer’s Washington Street. Just like their hopes for a Super Bowl win, the keys may lost forever.
Interested in trying something new? The Hungry Buffalo, Custer’s newest restaurant located at 607 Mount Rushmore Road, is offering a unique selection of food and flavors for the season.
The Hungry Buffalo is managed by Isaac and Yael Yerushalmi, who came to Custer from Miami, Fla., to get the business up and running.
After selling their restaurant of 12 years in Miami, the Yerushalmis received a phone call from the owner of the building here in Custer, whom they have known for many years. He said he had a space for a restaurant and asked if they wanted to take it on.
Don’t Panic LLC, the only South Dakota-based organization regularly hosting public wilderness medicine courses, announced its comprehensive fall 2025 training schedule. Owned by husband-and-wife team Sam and Nora Smolnisky, Don’t Panic brings local expertise and a unique instructional approach to handling medical emergencies in an area where assistance is not readily available.
