Garden tour set for Sunday

Custer Mile High Garden Club will host the 18th Annual Avis Hespen Memorial Garden Tour from 1-3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 27. Hespen and her sister Caroline Hatton were founding members of the local GC in January 1996. The twosome shared garden witticisms, sound gardening practices, seeds, bulbs and cuttings quite liberally. 
Hespen would say, “I like any color, as long as it’s red!” Red-clad garden club members welcome visitors to each garden and will answer your questions.

Golden opportunities to experience Gold Discovery Days

Celebrate the golden days of summer in Custer at the 102nd Annual Gold Discovery Days celebration July 18-20.
In 1874 Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer led the 7th Cavalry troops into the Black Hills, where gold was discovered near present-day Custer. Along with the gold, Colonel Custer and his men discovered a wealth of beauty in the Black Hills.
Starting in 1923, Gold Discovery Days was born to commemorate the discovery. This year’s celebration promises something fun for everyone.

Royalty ready to reign

Three Custer High School Class of 2025 graduates are set to reign over the 102nd annual Gold Discovery Days this weekend.
Quinn Lewison was selected as this year’s queen by a panel of judges after an interview process that takes into account other factors such as academic performance, community/volunteering efforts, etc. Joining her in royalty are princesses Makenna Allen and Julianna Uphoff.

Dennis, Kelley, Kothe are parade marshals

Three longtime Custer residents are being honored with the role of parade marshal in the 102nd Gold Discovery Days celebration, including Diane Dennis, Jim Kelley and Donna Kothe. Each marshal has made a golden mark in the community and has special memories of helping with Gold Discovery Days in the past. 
Diane Dennis said she was very surprised to hear she had been named a parade marshal. 
“I wanted to be one, but I didn’t expect to be,” said Dennis. “It’s quite an honor.”
