A Keystone 250th planning meeting took place Oct. 14 and was led by Laura Schluckebier, director of tourism for the town. The meeting included town officials, business owners, Keystone Chamber of Commerce board members and Brad “Murdoc” Jurgenson from HomeSlice media, the town’s marketing company.
Pennington County Deputy Jim Waldrop addressed the community on the rise of scams last Friday morning at the Hill City Center. He emphasized the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the importance of verifying information before acting.
With the help of AI, scammers are able to easily gather personal information and often use that information to appear credible and impersonate a family member or authorities to extract money or personal data from their victims.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first dedication of Mount Rushmore as a national memorial and one church’s tradition that has coincided with the event for the last century.
On Oct. 1, 1925, sculptor Gutzom Borglum hosted the dedication and flag ceremony to generate public interest and attract private funding for the sculpting of Mount Rushmore. Around 3,000 people were reported to be in attendance.
Three of South Dakota’s candidates for the next governor are in support of a statewide policy or law banning cell phones from school classrooms. Currently, about one-third of South Dakota school districts have adopted stricter phone policies that involve removing student phones during at least part of the school day, with some banning them for the entire day. Last year, Hill City School District followed suit, adopting a policy banning phone usage during school hours with the exception of lunch period.
For more than 50 years, longtime Hill City resident Dale Schrier has been a steadfast supporter of the Hill City School District and loyal follower of Ranger athletics, quietly contributing in countless ways.
Most recently, Schrier gifted personalized towels to the entire high school volleyball team, with each player’s name embroidered on their very own hand towel, 39 in total.
The Hill City Area Community Foundation (HCACF) is again hosting an adults-only casino night, the popular fundraiser and social event that supports the mission of the foundation. The Oct. 18 event will be held at High Country Guest Ranch, now owned by Recreational Adventures Co., which has donated the venue. Stacia Peters, who is the president for the HCACF foundation advisory board, calls the location a great venue and is appreciative for the space.
